Girlfriend jeans: The Dictator gives the skinny

Dumped Not Dumpy, Central

If skinny jeans are ever hanging off your body, then you yourself are too skinny. However, I suspect you mean low-waisted and I do share your concerns about that style. You're correct in suggesting there is now a confusingly long list of choices when it comes to jeans. But we could end the discussion right now, because it doesn't matter what they're called as long as they look good. You've just got to try them on. Since denim is hot for spring-summer, I'll indulge you. Unlike the baggy "boyfriend" jeans inspired by men's cuts, the "girlfriend" silhouette is meant for women. The jeans start slightly higher on the hip, but not as high-waisted as the "mom" style. They're slimmer than boyfriends though not "skinny", and made from a more rigid, non-stretch denim. The leg is usually tapered and hemmed high on the ankle, though not always; that part varies according to brand. River Island offers the Light Wash Ripped Knee Eva Girlfriend Jean (HK$599; www.zalora.com.hk) while Topshop has the baggier Moto Blue Wash Girlfriend Jeans (HK$464). The Gap's are called 1969 Destructed Girlfriend (HK$449). Oh, and don't confuse them with Levi's "Ex-Girlfriends" either. Those are women's-inspired super-skinny jeans for men. Still confused? Me too.

Harsh Words, Mid-Levels

Who are you kidding? Colouring your nails isn't exactly natural. Of course you need industrial strength remover, which will not only soak into your digits but also create hazardous fumes. Or so I thought. Acetone was maligned as a carcinogen for years, but the Environmental Working Group now says otherwise. Just check its Skin Deep database (www.ewg.org/skindeep), which lists acetone as a potential irritant, but only ranks it a moderate concern. Acquarella scores highly with its natural, water-based, acetone-free nail polish remover (HK$46.50; www.amazon.com). However, the company only recommends it for removing its own nail polishes. SpaRitual Fluent Lacquer Remover with Extra-Strength Conditioning is vegan and uses sugar-derived solvents with Italian mandarin essential oil to take off the colour without drying nails (HK$140; www.abeautybar.com.hk). Priti NYC Nail Polish Remover is organic soy-based and biodegradable (HK$147; www.amazon.com). You might not even need a remover if you start with a health-conscious, "three-free" nail polish. That is, one without toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate. Suncoat (HK$55; www.iherb.com), for example, can be peeled right off.
