Review | Book review: David Walliams brings The BFG to life
Ahead of the live-action Spielberg movie, Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant is convincingly read by the British comedian

Roald Dahl’s estate has done an admirable job matching novels to audiobook narrators in the past, so with Steven Spielberg’s live-action movie in cinemas now, I thought it high time to download the much-loved BFG read by David Walliams. The British comedian has a rather chic public persona, so he seems a tad louche and refined for a flatulent, whizpopping, frobscottle-glugging dream-weaver. The BFG befriends Sophie, a Dahl-esque orphan, who having escaped being eaten by Fleshlumpeater (a nasty giant) watches as the BFG unwittingly unleashes a nightmare on humanity. Walliams’ smooth, almost comforting voice is aided by some jaunty music, nice sound effects and convincing characterisation.
