Who started it? Jason Stalvey grew up in South Carolina, in the United States, and spent more than 10 years working as a doctor while indulging his passion for bags on the side. It was only when he began searching for the perfect alligator duffel bag that he contemplated making his own. After years of sourcing the right tannery, supplier and factory, he created more than 20 pieces that were quickly snapped up by friends. Soon he added more products and Stalvey the label officially launched in 2014. Today it is available at luxury retailers including Barneys New York.

Why we love it: Stalvey believes that exotic skins, although precious, are a luxury that should be enjoyed every day. As such the brand takes everyday items – from gym bags and backpacks to crossbodies and baseball hats – and transforms them into luxurious pieces. While the designs pay homage to streetwear, the final product is uber luxe – bags are lined with lambskin while all the hardware is custom made and plated in 18-carat gold. The majority of the items are handmade in New York. In keeping with the brand’s philosophy, there are no seasonal collections, just a curated selection of items for women and men that fit in with a modern lifestyle. And in keeping with the luxury vibe, custom colours are available.

What we’d pick: the best-selling silk-lined baseball cap (above right; HK$42,290), which is available in a range of skins. For the ultimate everyday luxury you can’t beat the sporty Sun backpack (above left; HK$158,990), with a lambskin-lined interior and hand-painted edges. Women will love the Frances Speedy bag (top; HK$89,490), inspired by the classic doctor’s bag.

Where can you get it? Stalvey is available at Lane Crawford, IFC Mall, Central, tel: 2118 3388.
