Who started it? American footwear label Athletic Propulsion Labs was founded by identical twins Adam and Ryan Goldston in 2009. Keen sportsmen, the pair wanted to create a line of shoes that would not only revolutionise athletic performance but was also cutting edge in terms of design. In 2010, they unveiled their first product, the Concept 1 basketball shoe, equipped with their innovative eight-spring Load ‘N Launch Technology. It became the first shoe ever banned by the United States’ National Basketball Association for providing an unfair competitive advantage to players. Since then, the duo have made countless innovations that have resulted in them being honoured at the White House and featured in magazines such as Forbes.

Why we love it: Athletic Propulsion Labs has singlehandedly revolutionised the trainer. The brand’s products tick all the boxes when it comes to style as well as technical wizardry. Over the years it has created products that seamlessly mix technology and fashion including the TechLoom Pro, which features a one-piece woven upper made using a complex knitting technique and is equipped with Propelium midsole technology for comfort and shock absorption.

What we’d pick: the TechLoom pro (above right; HK$1,350) in a cool combination of neon yellow and blue and the Ascend mesh trainer (above left; HK$1,755), which pays tribute to streetwear with its midcut silhouette, honeycomb mesh and contrasting colourway.

Where can I get it? Athletics Propulsion Labs is available at Lane Crawford, IFC Mall, Central.
