Keeping up with Hong Kong's rich and young becomes a hi-tech challenge

Keeping up with the Joneses - or in Hong Kong's case, the Chungs - used to be so easy. If a spoiled female was flashing around MO Bar with the newest Lanvin or an attention-grabbing pair of Louboutins, then I'd have to show her what class really means the following week during tea at Sevva, with an understated new Prada and a timeless (and expensive) Goyard.

But with younger girls these days, it's hard to know what exactly to keep up with. I guess these princesses must be first-generation dotcom money because to them a must-have accessory is as much MCM as something called USB. It's no longer enough to show off a bedazzled new phone, you have to have the right phone and use the right app.

Personally, I feel like Penny from The Big Bang Theory every time I go into the telecom shop - yes, the sales boys often do have trouble with eye contact. If I want them to explain something very slowly, I just show a lot of cleavage. Usually, I still don't understand, so I lean in a bit and get them to just fix everything for me. They're sweet. It's like having a personal stylist for IT.

Anyway, even the old school tai-tais now inundate me with blogs, most of which resemble a glorified high school yearbook. Honey, people don't need to see so many close-ups of you and your BFFs.

Then again, platforms such as Facebook are great because I can keep track of these women and the ghastly places they go to. Did you see who was drunk in the background of the photos at a pizzeria opening?

Still, it's rather annoying how many platforms I have to check just to stay on top of things. There's Whatsapp, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Weibo, now there's pressure to join Line, put stuff in Pinterest and check in on Foursquare.

If all the girls are gossiping about some post but you haven't seen it, it's like being the last person to acquire a Birkin. The funny thing is most of them even have a professional networking LinkedIn account, even though these gals haven't worked in years.

But I love that it's a way we can all support each other. For example, last week my friend Joyce endorsed me for "Fashion" because of my dress sense. This week, I will endorse her for "Business" because I think if she ever starts her yoga studio-cum-fashion boutique it would be a big success. Think about it: you look at clothes while you work out. Genius!

I would definitely give her a "Like". #Loveyou, #meanit!
