Obviously, the technique showcase was for guests' eyes only. They were asked not to take pictures or videos. They were encouraged, however, to add a personal touch on their purchases by having their initials stitched onto the bags and clutches.

We spotted a handful of tai tais deciding which crocodile-skin letters to use on their arm candies. Bag snobs went all gaga at a limited-edition classic Knot bag, featuring a special knot handcrafted in 18ct gold and paved diamonds. We caught up with guests including model Janet Ma, fashion designer Bonita Cheung, socialite Eleanor Morris and Zhang Zixuan, director of fashion education at Tsinghua University, who flew in from Beijing.

It’s too bad they won’t allow us to take videos. Think if I watch them long  enough I’ll be able to memorise the technique?

You must be very familiar with Italy, even your superstar daughter Karen Mok got married in Italy.
Every time I go to Rome, I’m happy to see all the ancient artefacts scattered around town. However, I’m sad at the same time because they aren’t being well preserved.

Do you think Italian culture and craftsmanship are well received in Hong Kong?
I admire Alessandra Schiavo (consul general of Italy) for bringing the works of legendary artists, such as Sandro Botticelli’s Venus, to Hong Kong. She’s set a great example [in promoting Italian culture in Hong Kong].

Do you have any preference in bags?
I’m really fussy with bags. I’m not a fan of “it” bags. I look for style and functionality.

Will Karen be working over Christmas? How does your family celebrate?
We used to have big family gatherings, but now many members have moved overseas. Work is important for Karen and I don’t want to put any pressure on her.
