EVENT Manish Arora Spring/Summer 2014 VIP Cocktails
WHERE On Pedder at Joyce, New World Tower, Central

HAPPENINGS: Spring is coming, which means it's time to say goodbye to our heavy and weary - but fashionably safe - coats to make way for brighter, bolder and lighter pieces. One designer who knows colours and prints is designer Manish Arora. He is no stranger to the fashion world, having dressed the likes of international superstars Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Katy Perry.

Unsurprisingly, Hong Kong's own hip fashionistas, including Feiping Chang and Olivia Buckingham, were eager to meet the designer, hailed as "John Galliano of the East", at the special launch party for his spring/summer 2014 pop-up store at On Pedder. Guests mingled with the designer while enjoying snacks and cocktails.

OVERHEARD I love all of Manish Arora’s prints. He’s simply print-astic.

CHIC CHAT with Manish Arora

Welcome back to Hong Kong. What's your favourite thing about the city?
I love the food on offer, especially fresh seafood and street food. I also like the way people dress up here - everybody makes an effort.

You are obviously very inspired by India and your heritage. Are you inspired by Hong Kong in any way?
All I can say is this: for my next show, there are a lot of Oriental influences.

You introduced backpacks for this spring/summer collection. Do you think they are coming back into vogue?
Backpacks have definitely already made their way back. They are trendy and practical.

You recently won awards for your debut fashion film, Holi Holy. What's next?
I'm hoping to create five-minute microfilms every year based on fashion, but with strong, impactful messages behind them. I already have an idea for my next film.
