EVENT Hong Kong First Initiative Foundation Charity Gala Dinner
WHERE Grand Hyatt, Hong Kong

HAPPENINGS: You can always count on Michelle Ong to throw a memorable party. The founder of Hong Kong's First Initiative Foundation organised another stellar soiree this year to prove us right. The night was kick-started by the charity's ambassador, pianist Chen Sa, jamming it up with French Diotima Quartet at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Guests arrived for the gala dinner at the nearby Grand Hyatt ballroom. Celebrities and socialites including Canto-pop king Eason Chan, Bonnae Gokson and Peter Lam were spotted catching up with old friends at the pre-dinner cocktail while checking out the auction lots. The auction included coveted pieces such as a limited-edition Vacheron Constantin timepiece. Proceeds will go towards nurturing local talent and helping them shine on the global stage. Children Cantonese opera performers who have benefited from the foundation's educational programmes took to the stage and earned a round of applause across the ballroom.

OVERHEARD The children are really good.Forget ballet, I'm signing up my children for Cantonese opera.

CHIC CHAT with Chen Sa

We've seen many Chinese musicians launch to fame on the global stage. What do you think is the key support you need to do that?

Recognition is very important. What HKFIF is doing right now is also very important.

What is the importance of passing on knowledge through master classes?

Each child needs different advice. I try my best to offer different suggestions to different individuals. They are all very humble and willing to learn.

How did you end up collaborating with HKFIF?

Michelle and I met through a mutual friend. She has been very supportive and I also appreciate the charity's cause.

Tell us about your perfect day.

I wake up without setting the alarm clock, wander the streets to find new surprises, and make myself a pleasant dinner.
