Hong Kong was once well-known for its music artists and actors, but now a number of the city’s biggest stars have left for the glitzy city of Shanghai. Whether it’s temporary or permanent, celebrities like Miriam Yeung and Charlene Choi have moved for a myriad of reasons from work opportunities to education for their children.

Here’s a look at celebrities who left Hong Kong for Shanghai.

1. Miriam Yeung

With most of her work now based in mainland China, actor and singer Miriam Yeung relocated to Shanghai in April 2021. According to a report by 8days, the 47-year-old star’s husband Real Ting and nine-year-old son have also made the move. The report also mentions that her son is currently enrolled in one of Shanghai’s top schools, with an annual fee of 280,000 yuan (US$44,000).

2. Laurinda Ho

The daughter of late casino tycoon Stanley Ho, Laurinda Ho is currently based in Shanghai, reports Today Online. The 30-year-old is reportedly staying there to accompany her partner Shawn Dou on his film sets and spend more time with him. In 2021, she also made several guest appearances in the Chinese reality show Stars Chaser along with Dou, reports Jayne Stars.

3. Charlene Choi

According to Huan Qiu, a China-based news website associated with Global Times, Charlene Choi shared on the chat show A Date With Luyu that she moved to Shanghai in June 2021 due to her increasing workload in China. The 39-year-old star also revealed that she is already paying for a social insurance plan to buy a house, and that she can only rent a place in the meantime.

4. Gillian Chung

Unlike Choi, who is a fellow member of Canto-pop group Twins, Gillian Chung made the move to Shanghai even earlier, in December 2020. According to Huan Qiu, the 40-year old actress and singer is also currently renting a house in the Chinese city while working.

Joey Yung was supposed to dedicate 2020 to her globe-trotting Pretty Crazy Tour. Instead, due to the pandemic, the tour was cut short and Yung ended up spending most of her time in Mainland China. In January 2021, the 41-year-old star appeared on the reality show Sisters Who Make Waves season 2. Later that year, she was also involved in The Masked Dancer as both a judge and participant.

6. Ying Caier and Jordan Chan

While career development is one reason for the move, power couple Ying Caier, aka Cherrie Ying, and Jordan Chan also moved to Shanghai. Their son is reportedly enrolled in an elite international school, reports 8days.

Hong Kong actress and singer Carina Lau has properties in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Suzhou, so it’s no surprise to see her settle in one of them. The 56-year-old star, who is married to Tony Leung, has been living in Shanghai since March 2021, according to Inews. The glamorous star often posts photos of herself exploring the city with her friends on Instagram.
