Hip-hop legend and long-time marijuana enthusiast Snoop Dogg recently announced that he wasn’t going to smoke any more.

“After much consideration and conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke,” Snoop wrote in a seemingly solemn message shared on Instagram and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Please respect my privacy at this time,” he added.

The rapper and entrepreneur, who has become known for his weed-related ventures over the years, provided no additional details in his brief announcement, which came the week after a new marijuana-adjacent product was introduced bearing his name.

Now the announcement has been revealed for what it really was – a marketing ploy. On Monday, Snoop, aka Calvin Broadus, announced that he was partnering with Solo Stove, a smokeless fire pit brand.

“I love a good fire outside, but the smoke was too much,” Snoop said in a press release. “Solo Stove fixed fire and took out the smoke. They changed the game and now I’m excited to spread the love and stay warm with my friends and family.”

Most have been somewhat relieved that the rapper – who has built a large part of his identity and personal brand around his pot-smoking habit – wasn’t giving up after all, but that didn’t stop ample speculation from fans before his clarification.

“You feel a certain way about this particular person who’s iconic in your life for various reasons,” said Americus Reed II, a professor of marketing at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. “And so you’re going to create a narrative in your own mind about what the particular reasons might be for this pivot.”

Snoop Dogg has been candid about his love for marijuana in the past and has launched several business ventures in the pot industry over the years – including his own cannabis brand, Leafs by Snoop. The rapper and his long-time friend Martha Stewart have also paired up for related ventures.

So which other celebrities have been open about their love of smoking weed?

1. Lady Gaga

In her 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, the pop icon opened up about how she uses marijuana to help deal with her chronic pain. She also told 60 Minutes in 2011 that she uses it to help with her creativity. “I smoke a lot of pot when I write music. So I’m not gonna, like, sugar coat it for 60 Minutes that, you know, I’m some, like, sober human being ‘cause I’m not,” she said.

The funnyman has long been an advocate for marijuana, and once said he was “not quite cut out for this world, but weed makes it OK”.

In a recent interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast in March, he confirmed that he’s a daily user: “I smoke weed all day, so I would imagine it would be worse if I didn’t,” he told host Steven Bartlett.

3. Pete Davidson

Ladies’ man Pete Davidson has a thing for weed too. In 2018, the comedian told Howard Stern that it helps him deal with the symptoms of his borderline personality disorder and Crohn’s disease. “There was a point where I couldn’t get out of bed. I was 110 pounds,” he said, “I also just love smoking weed.” He added that at that point he’d been smoking weed “every day for eight years”.

4. Miley Cyrus

The former Disney star opened up about her use of weed when she’s not working. “I don’t smoke weed when I work, only in my downtime!” she told British tabloids in 2018. “When I’m just working, I don’t think I function at my highest, most intelligent, most being-able-to-be-as-aware-and-as-present.”

On a podcast episode of Sibling Rivalry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, The Kardashians reality TV star called herself a “stoner”.

“I am a stoner,” the model said. “No one knows that, so that’s the first time I’ve ever really said anything out there.”

6. Kate Hudson

In a February episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hudson declared that she’d smoked weed with her parents Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell in the past. Back in 2015, she also said she “probably at some point” smoked weed with her How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days co-star Matthew McConaughey, on an episode of Watch What Happens Live.

7. Jennifer Lawrence

“The boys and I would always go back to our hotel and just drink whiskey and get stoned,” Lawrence said, referring to Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson – although it seems she’s since bid farewell to that lifestyle.

“My mother-in-law’s going to love this,” Lawrence laughed, before adding: “I don’t do it any more, I’m a mum!”
