Singapore is showing its prowess as a design hub by opening a new Design Incubator, where more than 40 brands will be presented on a rotational basis.

The retail showcase will focus on new-to-market and emerging designers. The space is dedicated to grooming Singapore’s design talent while profiling local brands in everything from fashion and

accessories to small home furnishings and souvenirs. The venue is set to open on Orchard Road

at the end of 2018.

“The prime location of the retail showcase will give our home-grown design talents and Singapore retail brands a strong boost in profile and exposure,” says Lionel Yeo, CEO of Singapore Tourism Board.

“It will also make it more convenient for visitors looking for contemporary products that reflect

Singapore’s character and design culture. Through it, we also hope to provide visitors to Orchard Road with a unique and differentiated retail experience.”

The Design Incubator will include incubation spaces consisting of private work studios, co-working

spaces, photography studio and meeting rooms. These facilities are located above the showcase and allow designers to conceptualise, develop, test and commercialise their products all in one location.

“The Design Incubator will house and support a vibrant design community and serve as a launching pad for aspiring local design talents,” says Png Cheong Boon, CEO of JTC.

“By locating together, designers will have opportunities to share ideas and resources, as well as collaborate with one another. This will help accelerate their path to market.”

The project is being jointly developed by the Singapore Tourism Board, JTC and SPRING Singapore and is based on the Design 2025 Masterplan to further strengthen the Singapore Design brand in the

international community and nurture local designers.

JTC appointed WOHA Architects, a local award-winning architecture company, to design the two-and-a-half-storey building, which is located on Orchard Green, at the junction of Cairnhill Road and Orchard Road.
