About 60 passengers had a lucky escape on Monday when a Lantau bus was left hanging precariously over a steep slope after crashing through a road safety barrier.

The single-decker vehicle ended facing downhill at an angle, with its rear wheels suspended off the pavement.

The 39-year-old male driver of the bus was taken to hospital with a back injury. None of the passengers required treatment.

The driver of the route 11 bus apparently lost control while travelling from Tung Chung to Tai O, along South Lantau Road near a car park in San Shek Wan.

The bus mounted the pavement and was only stopped by trees after crashing through a road safety barrier.

The driver was conscious when paramedics took him to the North Lantau Hospital for treatment. He passed a breathalyser test.

A representative of the New Lantao Bus Company told reporters at the scene that the driver involved was familiar with the route and had no health issues.
