PATTANI, Thailand - Suspected Muslim insurgents detonated two car bombs in Thailand's violence-prone south yesterday, killing five people and wounding a dozen others. Police said the attackers opened fire on a gold shop in Pattani province's Sai Buri district. No one was hurt and the attackers fled. When security forces arrived at the scene, two bombs hidden in gas canisters in a pickup truck went off, killing five civilians. AP
MANILA - Archaeologists in the Philippine say they discovered a 1,000-year old cemetery of rock coffins in a rainforest, but tomb raiders found it decades earlier and stole precious artefacts. The leader of the National Museum's archaeological dig, Dr Eusebio Dizon, said local authorities were informed last year about the site, in a forest some 200 kilometres southeast of Manila. AFP
YANGON - Hundreds of people in Yangon urged an end to the conflict between Kachin ethnic minority rebels and Myanmar's army. In a rally to mark the International Day of Peace, at least 200 people - including Kachins, artists and civil society groups - many wearing blue T-shirts bearing the slogan, "Stop civil war", carried banners and plastic doves. Earlier in the day, police refused to let about 100 people board buses for the capital, Naypyidaw. AFP, AP
