Marines killed in raid on Abu Sayyaf

MANILA - Philippine marines searching for hostages in the hinterlands of Patikul town in Sulu province clashed with Abu Sayyaf militants, leaving three marines and two insurgents killed. The fighting continued throughout the day. AP

 

Malaysian 'terror' pair held in Lebanon

KUALA LUMPUR - Lebanese authorities have arrested two Malaysians "on suspicion of having links with the al-Qaeda terrorist group", Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said. The pair, aged 28 and 21, were arrested in Beirut on October 18 and will appear in a military court today. AFP

 

Philippine mayor shot dead

MANILA - A mayor belonging to President Benigno Aquino's political party has been shot dead by unidentified attackers. Raul Matamorosa, of Lupi town in eastern Bicol region, was having a TV repaired when he was shot in the head. AFP

 

Protesters seek to oust Thaksin's sister as PM

BANGKOK - Anti-government protest groups that helped oust governments linked to former PM Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006 and 2008 held a rally to start a campaign to unseat his sister. They accuse Yingluck Shinawatra's administration of incompetence, corruption and tolerating attacks on the monarchy. Bloomberg
