Police say eight children and three adults drowned when their boat capsized in a flooded river in eastern India.

Police officer Navin Kumar Singh says the grieving relatives gathered on the banks of the Kosi river as rescuers pulled out the bodies on Friday.

The victims were returning home on Thursday night from a village across the river where they attended a relative’s funeral, Singh said.

He says 24 people swam to safety in Madhepura district, 340 kilometres northeast of Patna, the Bihar state capital.

Heavy monsoon rains have flooded rivers in parts of India, where boats are often the main mode of transport in remote areas. Accidents are common as many ferries are poorly built and often overcrowded, with little regard for safety regulations.
