UN’s top court to revisit Malaysia’s dispute with Singapore over island’s sovereignty
The UN’s top court said on Thursday it would hold hearings in June into Malaysia’s request to overturn its ruling in a decades-old dispute with Singapore concerning a tiny but strategic island.
The International Court of Justice said it would hear arguments “concerning the revision of the judgment of 23 May 2008 in the case concerning sovereignty over Pedra Branca/Pulau Batu Puteh.”
Four days of audiences will be held starting on June 11 in the tribunal in the Peace Palace in The Hague in The Netherlands, the court said in a statement.
Malaysia lodged its case in February 2017, calling for the court to overturn its ruling granting Singapore sovereignty over the rocky outcrop.
Kuala Lumpur maintained that new documents had been discovered in British archives backing its territorial claim to the islet.
