Coronavirus: Singapore reports daily record high of 728 new cases
- The health ministry said 654 of the new infections were linked to migrant workers’ dormitories
- The latest figures brought the total number of Covid-19 cases in the city state to 4,427
It is the highest single-day increase in infections in the island nation, the previous high being the 447 cases that were reported on Wednesday.
No new deaths were reported on Thursday, leaving the toll at 10.
In a statement, the MOH said it had also identified five new clusters of infections: the Leo dormitory (23 Kaki Bukit Road 3), SJ Dormitory (180 Woodlands Industrial Park E5), Westlite Mandai (34 Mandai Estate), 17 Sungei Kadut Street 4 and Grandwork Building (7 Sungei Kadut Street 3).
Of the new cases, none were imported.
It added that 654 infections are work permit holders residing in the dormitories.
The MOH also said the cluster at S-11 Dormitory in Punggol had 979 confirmed cases.
It said 31 more patients have been released from hospitals or community isolation facilities. In all, 683 have fully recovered from the infection and been discharged.
How surge in cases puts Singapore’s 4G leaders in a spot
Of the 1,886 patients who are still in hospital, most are in stable condition or improving.
Twenty-three people are in critical condition under intensive care.
The ministry said that 1,848 cases who are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19 are isolated and cared for at community facilities.
But the disease is spreading rapidly within the large migrant worker community, highlighting what rights groups say is a weak link in containment efforts.
