A man has been arrested on suspicion of imprisoning an 18-year-old girl in an underground cellar for 11 days and repeatedly raping her.

The man, a 36-year-old Henan native named Chen Xiaolong, lived in a migrant workers' village in Zhejiang province’s Jiaxing city, Qianjiang Evening News reported. After renting a house in 2012, he secretly began digging a hidden cellar and completed it this year. On June 12, Chen abducted an 18-year-old girl surnamed Guo from a karaoke bar and forced her into the underground cellar, the report said. He reportedly chained her hands and feet together, threatened her with a fruit knife and an electric baton and repeatedly raped her.

Guo managed to keep a small pair of nail clippers stowed away during her abduction. She used the clippers to gradually cut through her chains over 11 days. On June 23, she waited until Chen was away before she finally freed herself and climbed out of the underground cellar to scream for help. Neighbouring residents notified police after seeing her naked body at the window and hearing her cries.

“She was a very pretty girl with especially white skin,” one neighbour told the Qianjiang Evening News. “[She was crying] ‘if you do not help me, this man will kill me tonight!’”

Police rescued Guo and apprehended Chen Xiaolong that evening after he returned to his house.

Investigations into the underground cellar that Chen had dug revealed that it was about three metres long, a metre wide and one and a half metres high. Chen had covered up the opening to the cellar with cardboard, and had placed a quilt and carpet inside for his victim to sleep on. He had also installed lights, fans and a bucket for Guo to use as a toilet.

Chen, who has been arrested and officially placed in police custody as of July 25, reportedly told authorities he had been inspired to dig the underground cellar and find a victim after being influenced by two online audiobooks entitled 10 Sins and Doomsday Cockroaches. Both audiobooks are based on well-known Chinese horror novels - 10 Sins focuses on 10 murders that occur in everyday life with little public attention, and Doomsday Cockroaches is an apocalyptic science fiction story.

Chinese netizens were aghast at the news. Most commentators on Sina Weibo praised Gou’s bravery, saying that she was lucky to “escape from the jaws of death.” Others commented than Chen was a “psychopath”.

“This man is disgusting!” one netizen wrote. “Truly a psychopath… He dug a hole, imprisoned a girl, and raped her over and over again? And all for sex! He really is human scum at its worst.”
