Hunan man accuses one-child-policy officers over forced late-term abortion

A Hunan resident accused local family-planning staff of carrying out a forced abortion seven months into his wife’s pregnancy, increasing tension between the public and the one-child policy bureau over the country’s one-child-policy, media reported on Monday.

Lianyuan resident Wu Yongyuan, father of a four-year-old son, claimed local one-child-policy officers forced his wife to abort a seven-month fetus back in 2011, an ordeal that subsequently led to her developing schizophrenia, a Chengdu news portal reported on Monday.

Lianyuan city government on Tuesday said it had set up a panel to investigate the claim, the website said. A spokesman for the health ministry said it also acknowledged the case.

According to the news report from chengdu.cn, Wu said the one-child-policy officers escorted his wife from their rented home, forced her into a vehicle and drove her to Lianyuan Chines medicine hospital on November 1. In the hospital they forged her signature on the surgery consent form and asked doctors to give her an injection to induce labour, the report said.

Doctors confirmed with chengdu.cn that the woman was brought in by Lianyuan government staff who signed her consent form.

Responding to the accusation, Anping county governor told the website: “This is a duty every resident is obliged to follow. It must be carried out.” Anping county party chief also said that government can only be deemed responsible if an evaluation proves there is a direct relationship between a forced abortion and a woman’s psychological illness.

A year ago a similar late-term abortion in Shaanxi sparked a nationwide outcry which led to the suspension of three family-planning officials.
