Two mentally ill men in China’s southern Guangxi province were stripped to their underpants and forced to kneel on sharp stones under scathing sunlight for two hours after they were caught stealing bananas, Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

The two men - with hands tied behind their backs - were each wearing a sign which said: “banana thieves” during their humiliating street detention in Gaozhou city , according to a photo uploaded online by a passerby.

Police came to their rescue after being called to the scene by concerned neighbours, reported Xinhua. The owner and the two men later agreed to settle the matter, police said.

Although lawyers said the owner, who had punished and humiliated the two men, had violated their rights and broken laws, he was not charged.

In the same week in Central Hubei province,  a 34-year-old burglar was tied to a 20 feet wall for five hours by some Wuhan security guards, next to a sign explaining what he had done. The man had been caught climbing out of an apartment block with a stolen iPad and cash, said media reports.
