'Kill everyone in China': Outrage over comment during Jimmy Kimmel skit

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel has angered Americans with a skit that many did not find funny

UPDATED : Wednesday, 23 October, 2013, 12:48pm

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel has drawn ire from offended Asian Americans for a skit on his late-night talk show which jokingly suggested that Americans should deal with their debt crisis by “killing everyone in China.”

The clip in question, aired on the United States’ ABC Network on 16 October, featured a critique of the recent US government shutdown. In it, Kimmel and a group of children preside over a discussion panel titled “Kid’s Table” and spark a satirical debate over how the US should deal with the government shutdown and the debt owed to China.

Video: Jimmy Kimmel's show stirs controversy with comment about killing Chinese

One of the children’s comments that the US should “kill everyone in China” produced controversy, and critics have taken to Youtube and created a White House petition boycotting Kimmel’s decision to air the comment on his show.

“I was very disturbed by Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Kids Table’ show,” the White House petition reads. “It was aired on ABC recently and talked about killing all the Chinese so that the States do not need to pay back their debts to China. The kids might not know anything better. However, Jimmy Kimmel and ABC’s management are adults. They had a choice not to air this racist program, which promotes racial hatred. The program is totally unacceptable and it must be cut. A sincere apology must be issued. It is extremely distasteful and this is the same rhetoric used in Nazi Germany against Jewish people. Please immediately cut the show and issue a formal apology.”

To date, the petition has received more than 14,000 signatures, and Asian American bloggers and online magazines have echoed its criticisms.

“When Jimmy Kimmel asked the kids about what to do with the $1.3 trillion US debt to China, one boy replied: ‘Kill everyone in China,’” wrote David Li of Bostonese, an online journal servicing Boston’s Chinese community. “Jimmy Kimmel commented ‘that’s an interesting idea,’ and went on to discuss more about this idea as if there was nothing wrong with it.

“The editors and managers of ABC must have felt the same way, and aired these racist and genocidal discussions on air… Mr. Kimmel, this is not funny at all. You have missed a great opportunity to teach the boy a lesson when the senseless remarks were made.”

Not all viewers of the parody found it objectionable. While many Youtube commentators pointed out that the skit was in bad taste, others called it “hilarious” and pointed out that it had been meant as satire.

“If you feel threatened by a 5-year-old’s comments then you need to question your moral high ground,” one Youtube poster wrote. “I'm not American, [but] all this carries is entertainment value. I don't think it warrants this reaction. This kid meant no harm.”

ABC and Kimmel have yet to respond to the complaints.

The kid is just saying what millions of Yanks and other whites are saying. It's a good thing. It will make the Chinese realise how many westerners hate them - so they can stop their whiteworshipping (women especially) and adjust their responses accordingly.
sinohog
i find this answer very disturbing and counterproductive. Even worse, kids often reflect their parents' views. I've written before about being disturbed about nationalist violence on the mainland against Japanese. I find this statement just as disturbing as watching video of someone smashing a window. I would encourage all american readers here to go sign one of the petitions or even voice your concerns to the local consulate so that it is clear that this is an extremest view that does not reflect the vast majority of Americans' opinions.
henry.he1
Apparently it's not ok with this site since even the word J3w is censored lol
henry.he1
Yes this is just a joke. Let's have a kid answer the question about resolving middle East conflicts by "killing all the Jews". I'm sure it will be a laugh and fine with the population.

There are a lot of very stupid people in the world and that, not little children talking nonsense on a comedy show, is where the danger is. St Paul enjoined the ancient Corinthians to 'be wise' - try it folks. if you get angry because of children's prattle then how do you react when the Chinese Government tells lies every night of the week on the 7 o clock news? how do you react to the war mongering broadcasts every night of the week telling the Chinese nation the Japanese have a large military and are a threat? How do you react to the locking up of innocent people whose only fault is thinking 'wrong thoughts'. So be careful what makes you mad.

An apology from ABC has been made which should cool the Chinese.
Its rather intriguing if ones see's the other side of the Chinese
1) Given the opportunity they will be the first to emigrate to USA, as seen from recent emigration of 150,000 rich and well do families . USA is the no 1 destination
2) The largest visa lines can be seen at the US embassy in China. Students make a beeline to
the US Universities
3) Chinese love US music, movies & television, McDonald, KFC, Pizza Hut
4) They love the American life style and the Chinese women will do anything to get a white
American husband or a US visa
5) They will spend any amount of money to buy US property and have a US Green card
Why then such a hoola boo to Jimmy's comic show. No one is killing Chinese anyways. Why the double standard ??
robdingwall
If you go to China you'll find the attitude of most Chinese people is the same towards all westerners - so what's the big deal.

I was deeply offended and disturbed by this outrageous skit, but adding salt to the wounds ABC still has the clips floating on its website. Turn it down and apologize NOW,

I never knew holocaust or genocide can be so casually joked around like this... let alone being so brainlessly aired on TV (ABC).
Two questions immediately come into my mind:
(a) What kind of education this kid getting at home? Talking about killing so casually? Killing somebody to avoid an obligation? (No wonder we have so many shootings in US schools.)
(b) What is ABC thinking? Does it mean ABC editorial policy finds it acceptable to air racist joke like this?
I encourage people to do the following initial steps:
1) Sign the White House "We The People Petition" to get attention and corrective action. Do that before Nov 18. See and sign on this petition:
****petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/investigate-jimmy-kimmel-kids-table-government-shutdown-show-abc-network/tLxzbBjg
2) Sign the Change.org petition. See:
****www.change.org/petitions/stop-jimmy-kimmel-and-abc-from-promoting-genocide-of-all-chinese-people-jimmy-kimmel-must-be-fired
3) Write letters to ABC and ask for a formal explanation and public apology for letting the show to air, and promise to institutionalize a corrective policy so that this kind of racist stupidity will never happen again. (We cannot accept any argument from ABC that they have no control over this kind of stuff. Do they allow 4-letter “F” word or the “N” word, for example, to be spilled all over casually?)
4) Boycott, in the US and worldwide, the sponsors of Jimmy Kimmel show... if they do not respond properly.

WE SHOULD NOT ONLY BOYCOTT BUT HAVE JIMMY FIRED AND HIS PROGRAM CANCELLED.
HE EXHIBITED THE HIGHEST FORM OF IGNORANCE AND BIGOTRY. IF EVER HIS BRAIN IS DONATED, DONEE SHOULD REJECT IT BECAUSE IT HAS ZERO COMMON SENSE IN IT.
HOW COULD HE BE SO STUPID TO FIELD A QUESTION TO A 6-YEAR OLD ABOUT THE USA REPAYING ITS LOAN TO CHINA?
I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF THE CHINESE PEOPLE IN DISGUST AND REVENGE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE HIM THROWN TO THE DUNGEONS. HOWEVER, DOING EVIL FOR EVIL IS SENSELESS. IT IS SUCH A SHAME THAT THIS MORON IS HIDING UNDER THE MANTLE OF PROTECTION UNDER THE FREEDOM OF FREE SPEECH AS A JOURNALIST WHICH IS TOTALLY WRONG.
I BESEECH IN THE NAME OF GOD, ALLAH, BUDDHA AND THE OTHER DIETIES FOR HIS TRIBE NOT TO INCREASE....

you failed to spot that it was just a joke winnie.

If such a show was aired in China and the Chinese kid on the show said ' Kill all Americans' I very much doubt the Americans would react in the same way as all Chinese have. There are so many shows on TV where kids are asked to comment on many issues and their comments are not only hilarious but most of the time have an air of childish innocence. A comedy show is for entertainment ( at the expense of others) any comment coming from a child should be discounted as childish innocence and not taken seriously.
Stand Lay Lamb
The problem isn't with the kids. Kids do not know better. Kids saying the wrong things is to be expected. Like you said, any comments from children should be regarded with a less serious manner. The problem people have is with ABC and Jimmy Kimmel broadcasting it. They should have known it would be controversial. Yet they chose to broadcast it without consideration for the Chinese American community. In a way, they were condoning racial slurring.
As for the whole American reaction idea, Americans would react the same way. You should re-read the article. It clearly says "Asian Americans." In other words, "Americans" are reacting this way. Not Chinese and not China. It is Asian Americans. So Americans would care and likely react the same way. And in your China scenario, Americans in the United States would not care. However, Americans in China would most likely be disturbed. It is all about perspective.
Also, you should note that not everyone would be offended (in the actual and hypothetical situations). But there would still be a huge group that would be. And those groups are the ones speaking up.
NYCCitizen
If there was a show like what you say in China, 1)MOST Chinese adults(educated or not) will address the kid to "Speak no Evil" and that suggesting killing is a very bad thing. Most Chinese would not condone violence. 2)I cannot say what's the reaction of the US internet community major but I can assure you that many media will start a big scene saying that Chinese Government training the kid with the rhetoric and trying to shape the public views among Chinese. 3)Not sure whether you are still living USA, but USA has turned much more violet over last 20 years both from the internet comments, hate crime rates and actions of the government. 4)I sincerely hope you do not suggest or agree to your own kids of suggesting of violence in such an irresponsible way. Your insensitivity only increase their acceptance of violence in general. 5)Do you know one of the reason that Saddam attack Kuwait was to evade the debt they owed them?
ROBERTIUS
It was a joke. maybe not very funny. but a joke.
plenty of chinese condone violence - violence happens every day here in CHina against those who oppose the system and you bet we all condone it - otherwise it's off to a re-education camp. I'm writing from Beijing and I might write this on line but no way am I going to go on the street and protest.
So keep your sense of perspective - jokes in the US from children and a system based on repression here in China - which makes you more angry?

This is making a mountain out of a mole hill. I agree w Philbelus. It's a comedy show. It's satire. It's meant to make fun of ignorant american mentalities represented through a child. I think it is making fun of americans more so than Kimmel being racist.
To condense this whole situation: Kimmel said, "Look how ridiculous for us to think 'Kill all the Chinese' is some sort of solution " And you guys are up in arms saying, "He said "Kill all the Chinese' , he's a racist!!!"
CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT.
lawrence.hiddleston
So kill everyone in China in a interesting idea? What do you think we are?(Yes , I am a Chinese). If you own someone money should you pay them back? Please ask your lawyer. Should you give a chance to Chinese and allow them alive? Thank you so much. It is so sad for we have to let American "allow" we alive. I am so angry and disappointment to a public show allow this kind comments published. Chinese don't have a sense of humor so they are being annoying? It is humor for Chinese have feeling right? They can feel pain. It's completely incredible right? Those words out of a child mouth doesn't make it excusable. You don't treat it serious not mean we will not.
You still don't care ?
tony.wong.7161
Agreed. That's why few days ago there was an American kid, who is 14 years old killed the math teacher. Every year USA citizens die under gun shot more than the American solders died in the war zone. America has a 'volient culture'. Look at the wars after WWII, most of them were related to America. They should use TV program to teach the kids to be humble, if you have many share with the others, TV is a very powerful tool to inspire the kids they should not use the TV as a comedy show.
Philbeius
I'm no great expert on skit interpretation but...it seems like the whole idea of the skit is to ridicule the "solutions" put out by the children. For one, they're all quite terrible ideas. Don't pay them back? They won't lend you money. Kill us (yes, I'm Chinese) all? ...Yeah. That's why this segment was aired on a comedy show, in a comedic skit, and presented by children. Everyone making comments on if he chose another group, say the Jewish, would make the entire skit's premise irrelevant. The skit is comedic take on solutions to improve the US' debt standings. The largest holder of US debt by a foreign power is China. Not the Jewish. Not Mexico. Not *insert some group of people here*. It's like saying "Hey, let's solve world hunger. Let's draw some banana's," it's a bit odd. The comment by the 6 year old (or something like that) is meant to be taken lightly. That's probably why the producers chose a 6-something to present it.
jimmy.neill.33
What are you trying to say? The child meant no harm, right? Right. But why did the Chinese feel the pain? Right, they don't have a sense of humor. Right? Haha!
Did you see a news article recently about a young boy who held a toy gun got killed by the police? A toy gun? Got killed? A toy gun held by a young boy meant harm?
You said the Chinese got picked in this case because it was about US debt whose biggest holder is China. Ok ,ok. Then, do you have an example seen/heard lately picking on the Jews, the blacks or the whites by saying killing them?
Many times, we can laugh off some of the insulting incidents. But we can not let them go all the times.
Do you agree?
tony.pow.1
How about Kill all Jews? Or kill all Blacks. Our children live in a fantasy world without the guidance of the family, the school, the society and now the network. That's why when they can hold a gun, they will shoot.
tony.pow.1
Another failure of our family education. ABC had plenty of time to censor it. You're political incorrect on any races except Chinese.

The Jimmy Kimmel show is on US TV late at night. Kimmel is a comedian. The whole show is intended to be funny. This skit was intended as satire, and should be viewed in that light. There is a long tradition in US television of allowing kids to speak their minds: Bill Cosby 1998-2000, Art Linkletter 1945-1969. Both shows had the same name, which aptly describes this skit: "Kids Say the Darndest Things." Google "Art Linkletter Kids Say the Darndest Things" and see for yourself. Furthermore, what was being satirized was emphatically NOT China or Chinese people. This skit had nothing to do with racism. Rather, it is the level of US debt that was the object of the satire. The debt to China was just used as an example, perhaps because China is the largest non-US government holder of US debt, holding about 11%. The point of the satire was to show that kids, whose utterances clearly are not to be taken seriously, have no better grip on the problem of US debt than some American politicians. Any inferences otherwise are flights of fancy. And who will eventually pay off US debt? US children -- like those on Kimmel's show -- so how better to satirize the level of US debt than to use children?
jimmy.neill.33
Any reasonable person would consider this talk show is disgusting. But I am just wondering why Mr. Kimmel wanted to promote to our children the idea of killing the lender to get away with debt by commenting, "that's an interesting idea". The funny thing is that ABC news aired it.
Is that the type of education Americans desperately need for the kids? Is that the American way to let the kids speak out their parents’ minds? If the Chinese react to it, someone is going to say “this kid meant no harm. All this carries is entertainment value”. Right, let the kids be the shield while adults look for hideouts.
Why we should kill ALL the Chinese to solve our own problem? Is Mr. Kimmel suggesting we should deal with the Chinese as Hitler dealt with the Jews in the World War II? I guess the Chinese in the eyes of Mr. Kimmel and ABC news are just easy picks.
The last, are Mr. Kimmel and the management in ABC doing the right job? Yes, they wanted that way. No, that is a wrong way. Shame on them!

On Oct 16th, Jimmy Kimmel’s show on ABC aired a very disturbing skit titled
‘Kids Table’. That skit promoted racial hatred and genocide against the
Chinese. It is very disturbing to me and my family. In the skit, Kimmel
asked several kids how to solve the problems of the National Debt. One kid
said that we should kill all the Chinese so that we do not need to pay.
Kimmel said “this is an interesting idea”. I was shocked and appalled by
the answer of a child and the comment by Kimmel.
This was not live TV. How could Jimmy Kimmel, his producers, and ABC air
this episode without removing the disturbing comment and follow up
commentary? I find the blatant disregard for the racial and genocidal
comments appalling. Our children face an ongoing bulling epidemic. Jimmy
Kimmel just placed a bulls-eye on children of Asian descent. Furthermore,
the skit gives children the message that rather than repaying a debt, just
kill the person you owe money to and it will go away. This is much more than
a joke gone bad. This is a blatant disregard for humanity.
Jimmy Kimmel and ABC should issue an apology and institute protocols to
ensure something like this never gets aired again.
Thank you very much for your prompt attention to this disturbing matter.

I want to have a sense of humor, but just cannot. There should be joint petition to white house on child abuse by ABC and Jimmy in addition to China part:
These four innocent kids were manipulated to shout out the evil thoughts then being aired to the whole world (asking why so many senseless shooting). I am sure ABC is protected by some sort of smart contract/deal so nobody can sue them. But I am calling the parents and relatives of these four kids to stand up for your kids, they are the ultimate victims. We don't allow children to be part of pornography, airing them in such a disgusting show is just as bad. There has to be some new laws to mandate media to take better approach to protect our children, instead of using them to get attention. Those big children right organizations, where are you? Stand up and speak out!
bakedalaska.5201
America is all about double standard. They wouldn't dare to air this if its about other races.. They like to push Chinese around because Chinese is more humble, and they knew Chinese are not trouble makers. The host even provokes further by asking the kids whether they should allow the Chinese to live. If Americans do find this funny, first of all, please repay all their credit card bills or move out from their home, because they will be foreclosed, and don't pack your clothes, because they will be on sale also as part of their debt repayments..
globenet
Typical!!
This is what America have been teaching their kids.
Moreover, on nationwide TV!!!
Kids do not get ideas like this on their own.....it was fed to them, by their parents, TV, Schools, etc....
If this is how demcracy is, then it is the end....
Tiger62
This was a harmless child's comment and one thing people should have is a sense of humour.
taoscmplogin
Jimmy Kimmel is a complete imbecile. You would think he has the sense to minimise the outrage on the Braxton comment and move on, but he actually asks the kids subsequently: "so should we allow the Chinese live?" What is this moron and ABC thinking? Failed parenting is a comment some other readers made. I would think it has already happened to the kids' and Kimmel's generation.
taoscmplogin
It's pathetic whenever adults use the term "that's an interesting idea" on kids who say something totally unacceptable. "That's murder and you go to jail" would have been more appropriate. It isn't comedy or entertainment when you resolve problems with violence and death, even in jest. In whatever context, the broadcaster and its clown had better do some serious damage control!
mercedes2233
The kid meant no harm, but the adults should have known better what to do with this situation. Did the host talk down the idea, or explained how wrong that was? Why did the station still let this be broadcast? Did it support the idea? People who complain that Chinese people are over-reacting might consider the feelings if the kid had said 'Kill all the Hispanics', or 'Kill all the Jews'. Would the station still have let the show be aired?
li.yao.1656
I think it is a scheme. I didn't know what is "debt " when I was 5 years old. And in the show no one answer just pay the bill. Thinking straightly like normal kids, that is intriguing.
James.Chu.Sky
For all the people who think this is a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously are not getting the point. The point is not whether this is a joke or a threat, the point is 'Double standard'. If this is a kid saying 'kill all Jews', 'Kill all Palistanians', ABC wouldn't have aired it, PERIOD. For some reason, 'kill all Chinese' is okay to air.
phyongpp1
Hitler was once unhappy that the Jews are doing so much better than the Germans in almost every field including economy, science, innovation, and children's education.
So he asked his military advisers how to resolve this problem.
The shocking answer was to kill all the Jews so that they will not live on to compete against the Germans.
It looks like this story is coming back to haunt us, with the American kids being taught to kill the Chinese for outdoing them economically, etc.
This madness must be nipped in the butt, or else it must inevitably lead to World War III.

Unacceptable, Jimmy should be on the news again and apologize to the people of China. The child may not know much, but how does this man understand enough? He treats it as a joke. I strongly suggest this Jimmy Kimmel should apologize to the Chinese. This is racial intolerance.

As a chinese i find this disturbing. But i choose to leave a comments because i m a mother. I have a 4 yrs old boy, i know how surrounding can effect kids tremendously. So STOP influence our next generation with such racial discrimination, violence and hatred.
tonysellertools
It is totally unacceptable.
My little daughter once followed another classmate to say "kill" one kid in elementary school (at Bay Area). The principal took it very seriously and asked me to see him. How come ABC take these words so lightly now ? That may be the reason why more and more gun killing occurred in the schools in US when the kids are acceptable to consider "killing" is a solution.
NYCCitizen
This is the double standard frequent in US media nowadays. When the matter relates to US' imaginary adversaries, anything is acceptable while the reversing scenario will be addressed as a state sponsored rhetoric . I am so sadden by the fact that event he educated, supposedly intelligent, talk-show host will choose these type of low-blows to express their opinions. I went to many spoken words and comedy shows in New York City but hardly would host speak of killings people of any type-gender, age, weight, color of skin, sexual orientation nor race. The clear thing is that the shows pass all the ABC editors and PR checks so it basically ABC is agreeing to the opinions expressed. THIS IS NOT A REAL TIME LIVE show where they have only 3 seconds to beep out the comment.

I think Jimmy Kimmel has done the right thing to show to the world, the clip with these kids of America acting very candidly showing their hatred against the Chinese incidentally who is also America's debtors. Hatred in kids, that is what it is, why should we hide it away. After seeing this, people should reflect on what should be the right way to teach their children and also our children. Knowledge and value systems in kids are taught, they are as right or as wrong as what they are taught. This kind of hatred might lead to great problems among countries, and might even lead to wars. I don't think ABC should apologies, but the parents of those kids should.
david.miao.50
Jimmy Kimmel should be fired. and ABC should apology

Talked about killing all the Chinese so that the States do not need to pay back their debts to China. Even the kids might not know anything better. However, Jimmy Kimmel and ABC’s management are adults. They had a choice not to air this racist program, which promotes racial hatred. The program is totally unacceptable and it must be cut and BAN. Do you mean Kimmel is not wrong if he broadcasts things like "Kill everyone in Mexico to solve the immigration problem?" Or "kill all the African American males to end crime in the U.S?" Or "kill all the American Indians to take the tribal lands and sovereign back?" More effectively, why not just "kill all the Jewish billionaires and take over their fortunes" to solve the entire debt crisis, like the Nazi Germany once did? Under such media influence, I am not surprised that teacher was killed by her 14-year-old student in MA.

I believe we can put an end to this controvesy as Philippine President Aquino just volunteered to apologize to Chinese people all over the world (especially to Hong Kong) for the distasteful humor of Jimmy Kimmel. To make Kimmel show true remorse, Aquino also offered Jimmy a free one night stay in Manila Airport Terminal 1 - rated the worst airport terminal in the world (coinicidently named after Aquino's father).

I do not think the show should apologise, in the video, the adult, Jimmy Kimmel, did not make any "this is wrong" statement because it is the parents job to teach that, the kid said it, and therefore we should not make them apologise, but set this as an example of terrible parenting in the American society. The Jimmy Kimmel show has only shone light into such atrocious things, and is it now their fault to say sorry for showing the truth? No! They should not be forced to apologise and let this be a show of hands, for the monumental failure that is parenting in America. (just my opinion)

Mad dogs! A child can say killed 1400000000 people! Even human nature are lost, also hypocritically talk should not apologize, your mind is **** kicked! The United States has been able to flourish today is really a big miracle!

As we all know, there is a "joke exemption list" in American media, including African American, Jweish American and so on. Obviously Chinese is not on that list. That's the problem. Why you treat us in a more indecent way than you treat black people? Put us on the LIST! That's what Chinese people want.

In order to combat racism in the US, repercussions must be fore known and felt throughout the government. It has always been and will always be the cohesive power of the voting group in the US that makes politicians sweat and worry the night away. The Jewish lobby as well as the NAACP can exert enormous pressure on the federal, state and local levels of government by the enormous number of voters in their organizations that will ALL show up and cast the same vote in any given election upon receiving the call from their leaders.
The Asian community is slowly awakening to this immense power-cohesion is the key.

I am surprised by the quoted remark at the end. You just hint that you are neutral by saying that you are not an American. The fact is that this show has more actual values" than just "entertainment" (btw, what is entertainment is an issue of personal taste). This show creates controversies, anger, even hatred from the other side. You may think this is a harmless joke, but unfortunately, its negative impact is real and you have no control. So grow up and learn to be a hypocrite. It is even better.

I grew up in Canada and I've heard real racist stuff from white kids and a few adults towards Chinese and even Japanese. Some of those kids were supposedly friends with very casual attitudes and plenty of negative racial comments, but it was adults that surprise me. American government blame on China for their problems has led to all kinds of racist comments towards Chinese people and Kimmel producers choosing to air this blonde 5-year old's comments will let this child know it's okay say s*(* towards an entire group you know s*(* about.
Today a news story in Canada talked about a University of B.C. student chant (reflecting on Disney's Pochahontas) "whiteman steal our land." There was widespread condemnation by non-natives (particularly whites) by calling it racism towards natives while no one from First Nations (natives) not surprisingly had condemned it. The clamming down of a dark history by redirecting racism away from the accused or inventing terms like "reverse racism" is becoming a norm here. Whiteman's guilt is a myth and political correctness is practically dead in N. America.

It's like a 7 year old kid on a comedy show, what was Jimmy Kimmel supposed to do? Demand the kid apologize? Obviously the kid didn't know the gravity of what he was saying!! Take a chill pill
jaswinderpalsngh@yahoo.com
The host didnt even make an effort to tell the kid that its wrong, he rather kept on repeating the comments. What retards! And yeah seems like your parents didnt teach you too how to apologise for stupid comments.
mushi
this is something that is being a little blown out of proportion...the asian american community always tends to rise up in arms whenever something like this happens. but i dont blame them, because if you are an asian minority in the united states, you do have to face quite a bit of mild racism and the feeling of being at the bottom of the food chain. a joke like this would never have been made about africans, which shows that racism in america usually gets a pass when it's directed at asians rather than blacks.
Pinkor2
Mild racism? Have you ever heard of the exclusion laws?
caractacus
Is an over-reaction by hyper-sensitive Chinese news?
suagri@yahoo.com
Come on, Chinese Government is mild, they might think it is funny and go along with the joke! If the Chinese Government has as much guts as Iranian or North Koreans, hell will break loose! The world is one big joke anyway! Making comments is just a way to blow the joke even bigger out of proportion! All this reminds me of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", we are just a bunch of experiments outside the cage!
jmscscmp
The Chinese government will probably bring out an editorial on this in a few days...I can see it now...the party declares that American television presenters need to watch their mouths and keep their faces out of international issues!!

Some people cannot or do not get and/or appreciate the humor. It appears that the white house does not want people to get and/or appreciate the humor. The white house letter talking points appear to be a red herring and race-baiting intended to distract attention from the reality and enormity of the U.S. indebtedness to the Chinese and the irony that that debt burden is being placed on it's children.
suagri@yahoo.com
That is another story. U.S. has been playing the game for many years (30, 40 years) now. Forget about Adam Smith! It is a totally different game. Keep on borrowing to make a country strong is the name of the game, EU has been trying, but not working out that well. U.S. has everybody by their Bxlls, lend US Government (Government) money otherwise......end of the world financial structure....need of peace! Who dires to say no! The childrens are right, U.S. is not going to pay the Chinese or anybody, lend US money and they will pay you with your own money! Capitalism at the best! What is wealth? It is the amount of credit you can get and not the amount of money you have. US doesn't even need to rob you like the old days, they just keep on issueing bills and bonds. The SHUTDOWN is just the bankers argueing about the split of the booty!!
KwunTongBypass
Why don't we just offset the US borrowings against money the Chinese Government(s) borrowed between 1913 and 1942 - and never paid back! With interest.
suagri@yahoo.com
That you have to ask Taiwan if they agree!
KwunTongBypass
though there was only one China...
suagri@yahoo.com
True, but when it comes to money...but if Taiwan agrees to unity, the PRC might think about it! To buy it for US$1,000Billion.
James.Chu.Sky
No

I think the title of the article should be, "Chinese people lack sense of humor, recent incident shows".
mercedes2233
If the kid had said 'Kill all the Jews ', do you think anyone would be laughing?
chuchu59
When Americans state this sort of thing its called humor whereas if people of other countries say something similar its racist.
suagri@yahoo.com
It is not the Chinese who finds this tastless! There must be a wall around, you should bang your head!
suagri@yahoo.com
Another thing, it seems you don't like Chinese!
suagri@yahoo.com
However approved to air the program has moral problems! No matter if it is in the US, China or anywhere!!
sipsip1238
So we laugh when they make fun of how stupid Americans are and the stupid things they often do. And then we are outraged by comments by a child who probably doesn't know what the hell he is saying anyway?
If you read between the lines, isn't this just another joke about how ignorant Americans are both their adults and the children they have?
peace.onearth.90
I bet you'd laugh if the kid said to kill your family!
sipsip1238
I would probably get over it as it was just a kid saying it, adults across the globe has said a lot worst and have had less consequences than the outrage that this comment has caused.
It's a child, kids say stupid things, plenty of kids have probably said that they wish their parents were dead in arguments, should the parents call the cops and have the kid arrested because they take it as a threat?
You have to consider the context of the comment, now, if it was Jimmy Kimmel that made the comment, then I think there weren't enough outrage.
LunarRepublic
It was a five year old on a comedy talk show. Learn to take a joke, people.
suagri@yahoo.com
If the question was, "The US Government don't have enough money for health care, and old people are using up most of the health care cost, what should we do?" And a 5 y.o. says "kill them all!". Would you find it funny? Come on, jokes have limits, specially on a TV show! Isn't this promotion of racism!
KwunTongBypass
If the SCMP would have titled: "'Kill everyone in China': Outrage over comment BY FIVE YEAR OLD during Jimmy Kimmel skit" then everybody with brains would have wondered why this is news, and probably not even bothered reading it.
But modern tabloid journalism commands juicy headlines - doesn't it.
Given the sinking quality of the SCMP 'news' one is inclined to believe that SCMP "journalists's" pay is linked to the number of clicks they get.
clk2828
You got a point. Recent articles produced by SCMP journalists have really quite degraded the reputation quality of SCMP. As if no experienced head journalists are supervising the articles appropriately. Sometimes the angle taken does not reflect the actual truth of the situation, this is a no no for journalism.
tiffanyap
feel that it's an overreaction...but of course the kid who said it had to have a southern accent.
jayb
nope, didn't hear any southern accent. btw, stats show the "liberal" states with the toughest gun laws have the highest per capita gun violence (LA for one, has gun violence similar to Rio de Janeiro). the show was taped in LA, i presume Kimmel just get some kids from the local area... LA area...
suagri@yahoo.com
If he needs good rating, he might have asked a 3K parents to borrow their kid for the show!
jayb
did you notice the "killing" suggestion was made by the blonde kid in the middle? shows you "gun violence" has little to do with guns but the violent genes in american blood... especially white blood... it begins early... why do you think a little boy at this age... the first thing off his mind is "kill everyone?" then, over the course his upbringing, he will have access to more guns... welcome to USA... another american exceptionalism...
suagri@yahoo.com
It is in th gene, in the blood, after a bit of bad education, racist gangs, a few skits like this...what do you get? WWIII!
suagri@yahoo.com
You are getting the point!
jayb
Kimmel has the lowest ratings of the three. over 1 million fewer than Leno, Letterman every night. he was just trying to generate some ratings. can't do african american jokes, can't tease mexicans.... chinese is the new "bad guy" in hollywood. btw, it's NOT "asian american" as he said "chinese". but then, with Disney's portfolio in china, Kimmel will be apologizing to daddy soon..
yazi.xu.3
I dont feel threatened by a 5-year-old's comment, i feel threatened by US media which broadcast this vedio and by US parental or school education which give kids this thought...
aplucky1
oh look the pc police are in force with the their fake outrage
you are all so pitiful
it was children you thin skinned babies with zero life
suagri@yahoo.com
You are right!
It will be funny too if Chinese childrens say "Kill all the Americans, because they don't pay up!"
aplucky1
yes I would laugh if that was done, but you are threatened by a five year old that is scary
jayb
chinese children don't have to say that. americans are already paranoid with the chinese. this is why they have all these "pivots" around china.
joyoung
The skit doesn't really bother me but the reaction to the outcry does. I can guarantee you that if the question was "how would you eliminate crime in America?" and the kid answered "kill all <blank> Americans" (yeah, fill in the blank), that segment of the population would be frothing at the mouth. There may even be riots and looting.

Most people (non-Americans, especially) don't understand that in mainstream America, "racism" only involves blacks, whites, and Mexicans. When it comes to c.hinks in armor, Chinese food, and Jackie Chan, it's simply good fun and you're a hater if you don't laugh along with everyone else.
jayb
actually Don Imus did that (calling black people names and negative stereotype). he got fired AFTER went on an apology tour in the black community.
suagri@yahoo.com
If racist jokes starts at 5 y.o., there must be something wrong in the educational system! So granny bashing and animal killing should be OK if a 5 y.o. says it as a joke! And you will find the idea interesting! I think you are a racist, fascist! I asked my son who is 3 y.o. what we should do to fascist, he said " find the man and stone him!"
suagri@yahoo.com
When kids at 12 start shooting your children, you won't find it funny!
fearonjones
How anyone could find this offensive is beyond me... even the kids know it's a joke. So kids understand satire and some adults don't. Political correctness gone mad.
realestate
just goes to show... who is lacking a sense of humor
jaswinderpalsngh@yahoo.com
satire in your a$se. the question is why was this aired at first place? Or the host should have educated the kid on not talking evil. But nah, ratings are apparently more apparent in stupid America than teaching sanity to kids. Oh boy, the American dream is history, they all flock to Asia begging for finance.
