Doctor bludgeoned to death by 'unsatisfied' hospital patient

A patient attacked and killed 45-year-old Sun Dongtao, a doctor at a Qiqihar city hospital

A doctor in northern China’s Heilongjiang province was killed on February 17 by a hospital patient reportedly dissatisfied with treatment.

The doctor, 45-year-old Sun Dongtao, was head of the otolaryngological (ear, nose and throat) department at a hospital in Heilongjiang’s Qiqihar city, Xinhua reported.

Sun was hit on the head with a 50cm long iron bar around 10am while performing outpatient duties, local police said.

Sun died shortly afterwards following a failed emergency treatment.

One suspect, a 19-year-old named Qi Hongsheng, was taken into police custody shortly after the incident.

According to police reports, Qi had been unsatisfied with treatment he received from Sun and wanted revenge.

Investigations into the case are currently ongoing.

Attacks on doctors and nurses by disgruntled patients have been on the rise in China recently. In October 2013, a doctor in Zhejiang province was stabbed to death by a patient angry over a nose surgery.

In late November, hospitals in Shanghai, Zhongshan and Huashan began training staff in self-defence techniques that could potentially save their lives.
