Heavy rainfall will continue to batter southern China’s coastal provinces on Tuesday, including Guangxi and Guangdong provinces, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

Thunderstorms in the last couple of days have already brought record rainfall in southern China this year. Local governments were told by the weather authorities to brace for possible floods and mudslides.

Severe thunderstorms will continue to plague central areas of Guangxi and northwestern Guangdong, while nearby Hunan and Jiangxi will experience moderate rain showers, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

A blue storm alarm remained in force. The alarm, the lowest on a four-level scale, means rainfall will exceed 50mm within 12 hours.

Parts of Hong Kong, just south of Guangdong, saw brief spells of rain on Tuesday morning as a “trough of low pressure edged closer to the mainland”, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.
