More than one-fifth of the capital's population are aged 60 or above, the China News Service reports. Figures from the city's civil affairs bureau said about 2.8 million permanent residents in the capital fell into that age bracket as of the end of last year. People aged 80 or above numbered 474,000. Officials said the capital's ageing population posed a severe challenge to the city's health system and other government services. The number of women aged 60 or over in the capital is slightly higher than men.
Police in the capital have cracked 2,060 drug cases and arrested 10,455 people connected to the crimes so far this year, both record highs, the China News Service reports. More than 130kg of drugs were seized. Police said they received 1,710 tip-offs about the drugs trade over the past nine months, up 18 per cent on the same period last year. A police officer told the Beijing Times in August that the sale and use of drugs in the capital was spreading from central to suburban areas and that more people on lower incomes were developing a drug habit.
