Man’s nose bitten off
A 44-year-old man from Anhui bit off and swallowed part of the nose of a man he assumed was his wife’s lover, the news website People.cn reports. The couple had moved to Ningbo in Zhejiang province and his wife left him because he beat her. The husband assumed another man was the wife’s lover because they played mahjong together. The husband attacked the man and tried to bite off his nose after the pair had been taken to a police station.
Boy ‘killer’ traced
A 16-year-old high school pupil from Guzhen county near Bengbu who stabbed his roommate to death has turned himself in after two weeks on the run, the Xinan Evening News reports.  The teen said he killed his roommate because he thought he looked down on him. He fled to Zhuhai but eventually called his father and decided to surrender.

Fraud to impress lover
A 50-year-old woman in the capital was arrested after she tried to use a fake deposit book to withdraw 100,000 yuan (HK$126,000) from a bank to impress her younger lover, the Beijing Times reports. The woman lied to her 27-year-old boyfriend, who she met on the internet, saying she had 1 million yuan in savings. She said she would buy him a new car, but the fraud was spotted when she tried to withdraw the cash.
Festive flowers
More than 2.2 million pots of flowers have been placed around the capital for the National Day holiday, the news website People.cn reports. There are about 500 plant sculptures in the city and a total of 400,000 square metres has been covered with flowers and floral decorations. More than 150 kinds of flowers have been used to decorate the city.

Drowned in a prank
A student at a university in Shaoguan drowned after he was thrown into a lake by friends celebrating the end of their military training, the Yangcheng Evening News reports. Students threw friends and training staff into an artificial lake on campus for fun after a military parade. A training officer was also nearly drowned.
Jailed for burning home
A man was sentenced to two years in prison for trying to burn himself and his daughter to death by setting fire to his house, Guangzhou Daily reports. The man lived with his 12-year-old daughter in Guangzhou’s Zengcheng  district and had thoughts of suicide after his business failed. Realising he had no money to pay for the electricity after returning home, he turned on the gas and set his home on fire. Firefighters quickly put out the blaze. The man and the girl were unhurt.

Empty offices for sale
The site of an unfinished government headquarters building in Suiping  county near Zhumadian  will be auctioned off after construction was halted for over a year, %China Youth Daily reports. The site, consisting of seven buildings with the main structure already complete, covers an area of just over %11 hectares and is valued at %200 million yuan.  Construction was suspended after Beijing issued a directive last year banning local governments from putting up new office buildings.
Monkey show row
Four street performers in Xinye county near Nanyang  have been convicted of illegally transporting wild animals that were used in monkey shows, even though the performances are listed as part of the area’s cultural heritage, Dahe Daily  reports. The four were arrested for having six monkeys, despite having legal certificates to raise the animals.  The four were detained for 35 days.

Pricey gifts at school
Parents whose children attend a kindergarten in Wuhan  say its tradition of pupils giving presents on their birthday to their classmates is costing them a fortune, Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. Parents of one birthday boy bought expensive model cars for every pupil in the class. Another parent said she also spent several hundred yuan on more than 30 sets of stationery for her daughter’s forthcoming birthday.
Plastic surgery thief
A woman from Hongshan  district in Wuhan stole 70,000 yuan from her colleague to have plastic surgery, the Wuhan Evening News reports. The woman  had noted down the password of her colleague’s bank card when they went shopping together and withdrew 70,000 yuan from the account when her friend went to a public toilet. She said she spent 13,000 yuan on surgery, but her boyfriend had run off with 50,000 yuan of the cash.

Cheating husband payout
A woman from Yancheng  has won damages in court after she produced a letter written by her husband before they married promising he would pay her 5 million yuan in compensation if he cheated on her after they were wed, the news website People.cn reports. Several years into their marriage the wife found out he had a mistress and a child with her. The wife filed for divorce and has been awarded 800,000 yuan, and 70 per cent of the couple’s property.
Dim-witted phone thief
A thief in Nanjing  who stole an iPhone was caught minutes after he asked his victim for money for a taxi, the Yangtse Evening Post reports. The thief took the phone when its owner was sleeping at an internet cafe. The victim was near the cafe when the thief walked up to him and asked for cash. The victim said he would give him money if he could make a phone call. He recognised his phone and the theft was reported to the police.

Ran off with the circus
A man with learning difficulties from Jingan county near Yichun was found in neighbouring Hubei province four days after he disappeared with a circus, Jiangnan City Daily  reports. A witness said he saw the man, 23, get into a circus truck after watching the show last Thursday. The man has been reunited with his family, according to the report.
Warning over gifts
Government officials in Nanchang will be sacked if they are caught keeping gifts, or “red envelopes”, they receive from the public, Xinhua reports. The city government said all officials and state-owned enterprise staff must hand in cash they received at events including weddings and funerals or during national holidays.

Bus driver assaulted
A bus driver in Wenzhou  ran into three parked cars as he tried to dodge a slap on the face from an angry woman passenger, the Wenzhou Business News reports. Police said the passenger boarded the bus with her husband and their baby in a pram. The dispute started when the driver asked the couple to push the pram towards the back of the bus to make room for other passengers getting on board. As she became increasingly angry, the women slapped the driver on the face.
Statue thieves arrested
Police in Huzhou have arrested a gang who stole more than 20 old stone statues worth more than 30,000 yuan, the China News Service reports. The group started to target antique statues in nearby villages in February, but police were not informed until July when a villager said the stone lions on his village bridge had been taken.
