Subway to expand
Four new subway lines in the capital are near completion and test runs without passengers began earlier this month, the Beijing Times reports. The lines are due to formally open by the end of the year. Stations on lines 6, 7, 14 and 15 are decorated with different themes. The report said Line 6, which runs from the east to the west of the city, depicts historic canals.
Smelly sinkhole
A 4-metre deep hole in the ground has appeared in a road in the Wangjing district of the capital, the Beijing Times reports. The 2 square-metre sinkhole was caused by a broken pipe and was filled with sewage. Nobody was injured.

Damages for dead dog
A woman whose dog died in the care of a pet store in Foshan has been awarded 11,000 yuan (HK$13,900) in compensation, the Southern Metropolis Daily reports. The woman left her eight-year-old Yorkshire terrier Mickey, its mate and their three pups at the store before leaving for Hong Kong to visit her husband. She received a call five days later to say Mickey had died. A court ruled the family had raised the dog since it was young and saw it as an important member of the family.
Security guard on trial
A former guard from Dongguan has gone on trial accused of stealing 900,000 yuan from his security van, the Southern Metropolis Daily reports. The 36-year-old collected cash from banks, but allegedly took two boxes of money. He then went on the run for five years and was finally arrested this January. A verdict has yet to be announced.

Killed by cold 'cure'
A 51-year-old man from Zhengzhou has died from an allergic reaction after he was given an intravenous drip at a private clinic, the Dahe Daily reports. The man's wife said he did not feel well after eating lunch at home. She called the clinic saying her husband had a cold and needed treatment. The doctor came and put her husband on a drip, which caused the allergic reaction in just over a minute.
Social media 'rape'
A woman from Yima near Sanmenxia was allegedly raped by a man she met on social media, the Dahe Daily reports. She told her husband and he and two friends beat the man up. No charges have been filed against the man because the offence happened over six months ago and the case was not reported to the police. The woman met the man through the messaging app WeChat.

Anti-terrorism drill
Students at a university in Wuhan staged an anti-terrorism drill during their military training class on Sunday, the news website Hb.qq.com reports. The students at the Wuhan Textile University simulated rescuing a hostage from terrorists.
Caring surveillance
A man in Wuhan installed a video camera and an infrared sensor in the bedroom of his 81-year-old mother with Alzheimer's disease to keep watch on her, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. The man said he used the camera and sensors to check whether his mother was in bed or had left the room to wander about the house. After installing the devices, he has been woken up five times a night on average but said mentally he could rest more easily.

Fugitive 'killer' found
A man who allegedly robbed and killed a taxi driver 16 years ago in Changsha and went on the run has been found and arrested in Xinjiang , the news website Hn.rednet.cn reports. The man was 17 at the time of the killing and he ended up living in Yining after obtaining a new identity card. Police noticed the photograph on the new card in the national database resembled the picture on his real one and arrested him on Sunday.
Saved from Red Guards
An elderly man has kept safe about 100 photographs of Changsha taken during the 1920s and 1930s, hiding them in a box to escape searches by Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, the Sanxiang Metropolis Daily reports. The photographs were taken by the man's father, who wanted to burn all the pictures during the Cultural Revolution, fearing the Red Guards' distrust of history and traditional culture would make him a target. But the son secretly picked some out and saved them.

Gambling on insects
A 19-year-old man from Nanjing ran away from home after gambling 40,000 yuan on fights between crickets, the Modern Express reports. The man took the cash from funds his father received after he injured his leg at work. The man had been unemployed for two years before he became addicted to gambling on the insects' fights.
Fake diplomas racket
Police in the province have broken up a gang which allegedly conned more than 250,000 people around the country by falsely claiming it could get hold of college and university diplomas for cash, the Yangtse Evening Post reports. The 49 people in the gang charged about 5,800 yuan for an undergraduate diploma and made about 100 million yuan in the scam.

Hoax bomb alert
More than 100 Qingdao policemen and firefighters evacuated 200 employees from a shopping mall after receiving a call claiming a bomb had been planted, but it turned out to be a false alarm, Shandong Network Radio-Television Station reported. A man who allegedly made the call was arrested.
Wife burned to death
A man in Dezhou poured petrol over his wife and set her on fire after seeing her at a market with her lover, the Dezhou Evening News reports. His wife had asked for a divorce and the pair argued when he confronted her. She died on the way to hospital. The husband gave himself over to the police.

Wrong driving permit
A man has been fined 1,000 yuan for driving under an Italian driving licence in Taizhou , the Taizhou Evening News reports. He grew up in Wenzhou , but moved to Italy eight years ago and was briefly in town for business, he told police after he was asked to stop at a regular transport checkpoint.
Disastrous blind date
A man and a woman on a blind date in Yongjia county near Wenzhou called the police to mediate after she thought he should pay for their meal and he insisted they share the cost, the news website Fabao365.com reports. The pair met after much persuasion from their families, who though they would make a good match. There was no chemistry and he refused to pay because she had ordered all the dishes. Police persuaded them to share the cost.
