School renamed to honour war hero; Parents tie son to tree; Magnitude 5 quake rocks Sichuan county

BEIJING

School honours hero
A high school in Fengtai district has been renamed Tong Linge High School in honour of a general who died in the Battle of Beiping-Tianjin during the second Sino-Japan war, The Mirror reports. Beijing Nanding Middle School, as it was known, is located several hundred metres from the street where Tong was killed in the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in 1937.  Tong is one of the first soldiers to be honoured as a martyr after September 30 was designated National Martyrs’ Day  earlier this year.

Cold National Day
This year was the coldest National Day in the capital in 38 years due to rain across northern China, The Beijing News reports. The temperature in Beijing plunged to 15.4 degrees Celsius on the morning of October 1, the lowest since 1976 when it was 14.2 degrees. The city’s scenic sites still drew large crowds, with more than 80,000 visiting the Forbidden City alone on the first day of the “golden week” break.

 

FUJIAN

Parents tie son to tree
A boy in Quanzhou  was tied to a tree on a busy street by his parents on Wednesday night after stealing cash from their own shop, Strait Metropolis Daily reports. Neighbours called the police fearing the boy would be beaten by his parents. The couple told reporters they were “educating” their 10-year-old son, who stole money to buy snacks and toys. They took the boy home after the police arrived. 
Uncle swept away
A man was swept away by waves and went missing after trying to save his six-year-old niece who slipped on a wet rock and fell into the sea at a beach resort in Changle on the second day of golden week, Strait Metropolis Daily reports. Two other men reached the girl as she was held by her uncle. They pulled her to the shore but then could not find the uncle.

 

JIANGXI

Police seek ‘drug user’
Police in Xinyu have called on a microblogger who posed photos showing herself and other young women taking what seem to be drugs at a karaoke parlour to turn herself in, news site People.com.cn  reports. The photos posted on Wednesday by a resident who identified herself as Wang Ling showed several women smoking white powder.   

Girl, 6, stabbed to death
A six-year-old girl was stabbed to death by an allegedly mentally ill neighbour in a gated community in Zhangshu on Wednesday, Jiangxi Daily reports. Police said the suspect, who had been caught, had an unspecified mental disorder.
 

SHANANXI

Fatal gas poisoning
The president of a kindergarten in Yanchang county has been sacked after a toddler died from gas poisoning late last month, Southern Metropolis Daily reports. Twenty-eight teachers and students were sent to hospital in the same incident. Investigations showed that a cleaning lady poured a litre of hydrogen peroxide  into the toilet, which reacted to release noxious gas.

Child rape confession
Police caught a man who confessed to raping a girl late last month in Zhenba county. The 32-year-old was captured in a neighbouring county. The 12-year-old victim was at home alone while her parents were working in the city. She opened the door for the man who asked for tools to fix his motorcycle. Neighbours called police after hearing the girl screaming, but the man had fled.

 

SHANDONG

Bad reaction to soft drink
A migrant worker fell ill after consuming an expired soft drink in Jinan, Jinan Daily reports. The man had a severe stomach ache after drinking half a bottle of Master Kong  green tea he bought from a local supermarket late last month. He told reporters he was shocked to find the expiry date was May 20 this year.  The supermarket paid the man 814 yuan (HKS1,000) in compensation.

A shoulder to ride on
A young man made headlines over the national holiday as “China’s best boyfriend” for carrying his girlfriend on his shoulders in Jinan Zoo to make sure she had a good view and to protect her from the crowds, the Qilu Evening News reports. More than 140,000 tourists across the country flocked to the overcrowded zoo on National Day.  

 

SICHUAN

Duck soup extra
Customers found a pair of scissors in a pot of duck soup at a restaurant in Shuangliu county, the Chengdu Business Herald reports. They discovered the implement while stirring the soup with a spoon to make sure there was no meat left in the pot. One of the diners said the scissors were boiled for more than an hour, and “part of the rubber on the handles had melted”. A waitress admitted her colleague might have left the scissors in the pot after using them to cut up duck meat.

Quake rocks county
More than 3,000 residents of Yuexi  county were affected by a magnitude 5 earthquake on National Day, China News Service reports. Eighty-four houses collapsed and another 1,380 were damaged. No casualties were reported. The tremor was felt as far away as Hubei  province.

 

YUNNAN

Urban officers suspended
A group of urban management officers have been suspended in Dali  after they were seen beating two backpackers for illegal hawking on September 30, news site Yunnan.cn reports. Mainland media reported that two backpackers peddling their wares outside a high school were set upon by at least 10 officers. The pair were treated at hospital for injuries to their backs and arms.  The bureau said they had suspended the officers but denied they started the fight. 
Dorm ban after stampede
Younger pupils will not be housed in classrooms and dormitories on the top floors of kindergarten and primary school buildings in the province following a deadly stampede at a school in Kunming last month, news site Yunnan.cn reports.  Six pupils were trampled to death and another 26 were injured on September 26 when a thick foam mattress falling from a top floor caused a panic among pupils coming out of the building after lunch.

 

ZHEJIANG

Smokers cut down on litter
Seventeen volunteers collected 3,200 cigarette butts in Hangzhou’s West Lake  scenic area in three hours on the second day of the “golden week”, news site zjol.com.cn reports. The university students who volunteered to help clean the area said they collected twice as many last year.  
Highway hit-and-run
An elderly rubbish collector was in a critical condition after he was hit by a car on the Ningbo-Wenzhou highway early on Thursday, news website zjol.com.cn reports. Surveillance video showed the man  being hit by a black vehicle travelling at high speed while he tried to cross the highway.
