Saline drip ban
The medical authorities in Bengbu have banned the use of saline drips in outpatient departments at hospitals for people aged 16 to 60 unless there is a clear need for the treatment, China National Radio reports. The authorities said drips were used excessively to deal with common illnesses, along with an unnecessary use of antibiotics. People with symptoms including severe vomiting and diarrhoea will be put on a drip.
Held over illegal gun
Police in Bengbu have detained a man for illegally possessing a firearm after he was seen in a village shooting birds with an air gun, the Anhui Business News reports. Residents called the police after they saw him carrying the firearm. The man, 46, was also wearing a bulletproof vest and he confronted police officers with his gun when they arrived.

Two students stabbed
A college student stabbed to death two classmates with a knife in his dormitory in the Shijingshan district of the capital on Saturday, the Beijing Youth Daily reports. The young man accidentally bumped into a person who was running on Friday. The runner and a friend demanded an apology the next day, a fight started and the two were stabbed.
Teacher 'raped pupil'
Police in the Haidian district of the capital have detained a teacher who allegedly seduced and raped a 12-year-old pupil, the Beijing Times reports. The girl, who was tutored by the man during summer vacation, said the teacher took her to hotels nine times between June and September to have sex and he paid her money. She did not tell her parents until her father got suspicious late last month.

Electric bike ban mulled
The government in Guangzhou is considering banning the sale and use of electric bikes and scooters because riders' safety record on the roads is so poor, the New Express reports. A draft plan, which is now under public consultation, also suggests banning people from providing parking space for the vehicles.
Killed by falling brick
A 33-year-old woman died after a boy threw a brick from the seventh floor of a residential block in Dongguan , the Guangzhou Daily reports. The 10-year-old boy said he was playing on the rooftop of the building and wanted to scare other children on a second floor terrace by throwing the brick. It fell on the woman's head as she was walking on the terrace. The boy is below the age of criminal responsibility and will not face charges, but the family could be sued for compensation.
 
Guangxi
Punished by haircut
The deputy head of a middle school in Wuzhou forced about 30 pupils to stand in front of other children and teachers and cut their hair shorter as punishment for disobeying rules on their appearance, the China News Service reports. The teacher said that according to the rules boys' hair should be above the eyebrows and not cover the ears, while girls' hair should be tied behind their head. Some pupils commenting online said the teacher had damaged the children's self-respect. Some parents showed support for the teacher's enforcement of the regulations.
Trafficked girls go home
Police in the border city of Dongxing sent two teenage Vietnamese girls trafficked into China back to their home country over the weekend, the China News Service reports. One of them, aged 16, was sold to a man in Jiangxi province for 70,000 yuan (HK$88,000) to be his wife. The other, aged 15, was kept by four men in Guangdong.

College entry 'fraud'
A man and woman have been arrested in Zhengzhou for allegedly defrauding students out of fees to attend Henan Agricultural University, the news website Dahe.cn reports. The couple "enrolled" about 300 students who paid up to 20,000 yuan each. The university told them their receipts were fakes and that they could not admit them when they arrived to start classes on Tuesday.
Fake spring water
Tap water has allegedly been sold as spring or purified water to customers in Zhenghzou, the Henan Business Daily reports. The newspaper found that a water company was selling large containers of tap water for 1 yuan to shops, and they were later sold to the public for 12 yuan. The firm also allegedly used fake labels for a number of different brands on the containers. An official at the company said he had been selling tap water for six years and had never been caught.

Fined for air pollution
The province's environmental protection department has punished 82 companies for serious air pollution in the first nine months of the year, the Xiao Xiang Chen Bao reports. The firms were fined a total of 720,000 yuan. Nearly 40 per cent of the companies were industrial firms including cement producers and coal firms.
iPhones seized
The customs department in Changsha has seized more than 360 handsets of the iPhone6 which is not due to officially go on sale on the mainland until later this month, the Hunan Daily reports. The handsets must have the right import paperwork to be sold, and they are also subject to tax. They had been sent from Hong Kong, Japan, the United States and Dubai.

Anger over rubbish dump
A piece of farmland covering about two hectares in a suburb of Xian has become a rubbish dump, with waste from building sites piled eight metres high, the Huashang Daily reports. People living in the area said they had complained to the authorities and that officials had visited the site, but little had been done to stop the dumping. Officials said some villagers earned a living by helping construction sites dispose of waste by carrying it to the dump.
Pregnant mum's ordeal
The Xian municipal health bureau is investigating why a number of hospitals allegedly refused to treat a pregnant woman who had gone into labour, the Huashang Daily reports. The woman was told by a hospital in the Lintong district to go to a better-equipped hospital in the city centre as she would probably need a caesarean section. She said she went to at least five hospitals over five hours, but none would admit her. She finally gave birth at one hospital late that night.

Protection for joggers
A man in Taizhou has set up a part-time business acting as a security guard for women joggers, the China News Service reports. He used to accompany one woman on runs for cash, but decided to set up the service after he read in the news about another woman who was raped and murdered while jogging. He is a keen runner and has five regular clients.
Sewage waste dilemma
Hangzhou is expected to produce 2,000 tonnes of treated waste material from sewage processing plants each day by next year, but the authorities are unsure what to do with it, the news website Zjol.com.cn reports. A waste incineration plant was constructed costing more than 20 million yuan, but it has lain idle because its operating costs were so high.
