The medical authorities in Bengbu have banned the use of saline drips in outpatient departments at hospitals for people aged 16 to 60 unless there is a clear need for the treatment, China National Radio reports. The authorities said drips were used excessively to deal with common illnesses, along with an unnecessary use of antibiotics. People with symptoms including severe vomiting and diarrhoea will be put on a drip.

Police in Bengbu have detained a man for illegally possessing a firearm after he was seen in a village shooting birds with an air gun, the Anhui Business News reports. Residents called the police after they saw him carrying the firearm. The man, 46, was also wearing a bulletproof vest and he confronted police officers with his gun when they arrived.
