Kitted for disaster
The city government is selling kits to the public containing equipment to help them deal with natural disasters or emergencies, the China News Service reports. The kits include equipment such as torches and fire-retardant blankets and cost between 300 yuan and 1,000 yuan (HK$380-1,250). The move was to mark International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on Monday. The kits have been on sale at 34 outlets across the capital. They are designed to help in case of fires, landslides or other emergencies.
Transport fare rises
Bus and subway fares in the capital are likely to go up, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The average price for a subway ticket might rise to about 4.4 yuan. There is now a flat fare of 2 yuan to ride the city's subway. A public consultation will be held over the plans. The city government said more than half the cost of public transport in the capital was subsidised.

Ruff neighbours
People living in a residential block in Nanan district have complained of having to put up with noise for six years from 10 dogs kept in a flat, the Chongqing Evening News reports. The dogs were strays and were picked up by a neighbour, who is in her 50s and lives alone. She said she did not want to give the animals away because they were her "spiritual sustenance". An 83-year-old woman living next door said she had not had a good night's sleep in years because of the noise made by the dogs.
Vice gang busted
Six prostitutes and three men who provided flats for the sex trade or acted as pimps have been detained by the police in Yongchuan district, the Chongqing Evening News reports. The police raid was triggered by a tip-off from residents in the same block.

1m yuan bank bungle
An accountant at a company in Nanning put 1 million yuan into the wrong person's bank account, the Nanning Evening News reports. She was supposed to transfer the money to a client surnamed Dai, but she sent the cash online to another man with the same name who is also a customer with the firm. The man who received the money thought it was a scam when he was told that his bank had been sent a large amount of cash. After he was called by the accountant, he said he would return the funds because it was the right thing to do.
Death at building site
Managers at a construction company in Nanning have been arrested after one worker died and two others went missing following an accident at one of their sites, the news website Cnr.cn reports. The managers are alleged to have failed to quickly report the accident at a subway construction site. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Charity benefit concert
A 25-year-old with Lou Gehrig's disease, a brain disorder that can lead to total paralysis, has set up a charity to help others with the illness, the news website Chinanews.com reports. Wang Hailong held a concert at his youth club in Zhengzhou to raise funds. Wang, a keen singer, raised about 120,000 yuan from donations.
'Stalked' by old flame
A Zhengzhou woman knelt in front of a busy intersection on Monday, holding a portrait of the man she claims is stalking her, the Legal Evening News reports. The woman said the man, her former boyfriend, did not tell her he was married during their relationship. When she tried to break up with him he allegedly asked or hired other people to follow her and told her not to go out with anybody else.

Cash to care for elderly
The civil affairs bureau in Nanjing said there were about 10,000 senior citizens across the city whose children were eligible for government subsidies of up to 400 yuan a month if they quit their jobs to look after a parent, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The scheme is for the elderly particularly in need of care. Many people commenting on internet said the policy was welcome, but the payments on offer were too low.
Help for student start-ups
The provincial government has promised to help at least 60,000 university graduates set up their own businesses within the next three years, Xinhua reports. The government will grant preferential loans and cut the amount of capital and red tape needed to register a business. The province has the most university students on the mainland. The authorities also want private companies in the province to support new businesses set up by university graduates.

Lover 'stole valuables'
A wealthy married woman from Fengcheng has claimed her boyfriend beat her and took 200,000 yuan worth of her belongings, the news website Jxnews.com.cn reports. The 30-year-old woman, whose husband runs his own business outside the city, found life boring and got to know the man at a karaoke bar. She later found him to be a bully, but he refused to break up with her. He allegedly beat the woman, harassed her, and kept her car and other valuables. He was detained by the police last week.
Training for farmers
The authorities in Nanchang are planning to give training to more than 1,500 farmers to help them improve their businesses, the Nanchang Daily reports. The training is free and is open to farmers under the age of 55.

9 killed at petrol station
Nine people were killed after a truck driver sped down a hill in Xinghai county near Hainan prefecture and crashed into a petrol station, the China News Service reports. The driver was a 40-year-old man from Shanxi province . He has been tested for drugs and alcohol. He was not injured in the crash. The fire brigade was called to put out a blaze at the scene.
Early snowstorms
A sudden drop in temperature has brought early snow, and occasional blizzards, to regions all over the province, the Xining Evening News reports. The authorities said the snowfalls had affected about 260 square kilometres of crops, causing economic losses of 121 million yuan.

Teacher taken to task
A teacher in Xian had her salary docked for a month after she made nine pupils finish a test kneeling or squatting in the playground, Huashang Daily reports. The teacher said they had broken a rule that pupils could only go to the toilet one at a time during a test rather than in a group because they might compare answers. The principal said the teacher made a bad decision and should be punished.
Business ties cut
Some 887 senior officials in the province have so far quit their positions in business and industrial associations, the news website Cnwest.com reports. The move is part of a campaign to reduce officials' business interests and the potential for corruption. The Communist Party's Organisation Department passed a rule in October last year banning government and party officials from also holding outside jobs. A task force found that 40,700 officials across the country had extra jobs, according to the report.
