The city government is selling kits to the public containing equipment to help them deal with natural disasters or emergencies, the China News Service reports. The kits include equipment such as torches and fire-retardant blankets and cost between 300 yuan and 1,000 yuan (HK$380-1,250). The move was to mark International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on Monday. The kits have been on sale at 34 outlets across the capital. They are designed to help in case of fires, landslides or other emergencies.

Bus and subway fares in the capital are likely to go up, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The average price for a subway ticket might rise to about 4.4 yuan. There is now a flat fare of 2 yuan to ride the city's subway. A public consultation will be held over the plans. The city government said more than half the cost of public transport in the capital was subsidised.
