A driver tried to squeeze 13 passengers travelling on an overcrowded long-distance bus into a one-metre-square toilet during a random vehicle inspection, the reports. Inspectors in Yifeng county said that when they asked the driver why the toilet was locked, he mumbled that the door was broken. The authorities fined the bus driver 1,000 yuan and deducted 12 points off his driving licence.

The deputy secretary of the Hengyang transport department is under investigation for allegedly taking illegal drugs, reports. An unnamed source said that Zhao Yingfang had wet himself in an attempt to avoid taking a urine test. The report said others in the department have also been accused of drug taking.

Some 365 lakes are deemed by the government to have high-quality water and 75 of them are in the autonomous region. The central government has issued guidelines on strengthening the protection of the lakes by 2020. Yamdrok Lake and Basongcuo Lake are in the top category because their crystal-clear water is devoid of pollution. The state authorities have required that local governments properly protect the lakes, which cover a total of 20 sq km.

An armoured security van carrying banknotes crashed into a river near Lishui , the news website Zjol.com.cn reports. It took rescuers four hours to find the truck and another 90 minutes to pull it out of the fast-flowing river. None of the five security guards was injured. All 11 boxes of cash on board were safely retrieved. The report did not say how much money the truck was carrying.

The government in Hangzhou is to be loaned 20 billion yuan to redevelop slum areas in the city, the news website Zjol.com.cn reports. The project will cover five counties in the city and will be carried out over three years. It forms part of huge development plans in the province, including building bridges and creating new commercial sectors. The authorities have secured 270 billion yuan in loans for the projects.
