Rock paintings found
Archaeologists found more than 40 early rock paintings on cliffs in a valley near Jinchang , Xinhua reports. The paintings of human faces, animals and hunting scenes are believed to date to the Eastern Zhou dynasty (770BC - 221BC). Gansu has been home to many cultures since antiquity. In the 1990s, more than 200 rock paintings were found in the same area.
Man kills wife, in-law
A man attempted to kill himself after stabbing his wife and her younger sister to death on a street in Lanzhou on Saturday, Gansudaily.com.cn reports. Witnesses said the man, 40, followed the two women, both in their 30s, into a pharmacy, and attacked them when they came out. He was sent to a nearby hospital and his injuries were not life-threatening.

Foshan cattle thief
A Foshan man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing 26 cattle over the past two months, the Southern Metropolis News reports. The man said he started stealing cattle after he spent his savings trying to cure his depression. When he found cattle left unattended in a field, he would lead the animals away and drive them to a market in Hunan for sale. Police allege he made more than 200,000 yuan (HK$253,000) from the illegal sales.
Shenzhen to sort waste
The Shenzhen government has held a hearing on a draft regulation on waste sorting, the Southern Metropolis News reports. The attendees, including local residents and companies, debated on Friday how the rubbish should be sorted and when it should be collected. The draft regulation includes a provision for 200 yuan fines for those who fail to sort their garbage after three warnings. The city produces more than 14,000 tonnes of municipal waste every day.

Two killed in church
Two people were killed and another 19 injured when a church collapsed in Yichuan county in Luoyang on Sunday, People.com.cn reports. More than 30 people were attending the service when the wooden roof collapsed. Four were in critical condition.
Pair tried to steal tree
Forestry police in Luoning county, Luoyang, have arrested two men who tried to steal a protected two-century-old Chinese honey locust, the Dahe Daily reports. Local residents alerted police after seeing the two men, from Shandong province, cutting branches off the tree and attempting to pull out the roots. The pair said they paid 2,000 yuan to a man who claimed to own the tree and were planning to sell it in Shandong.

Milkman milked
It took a milkman in Wuhan five days to discover that a thief stealing his deliveries was actually a colleague, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. The milkman had received a rising number of complaints in recent months from customers who said their deliveries had not arrived. To catch the thief, the man hid in nearby buildings for a few hours a day and saw another milkman from the same company stealing his deliveries. The thief received five days' detention as punishment.
Man drowns saving three
A 64-year-old man drowned in Wuhan after saving three young men from the Yangtze River, the Wuhan Evening News reports. The three men cried for help and the man, who was an amateur swimmer, went to their rescue. The man's friends helped to haul them ashore, but the older man became exhausted and was washed away. The rescued men refused to tell the police what happened and would not thank the Good Samaritan's family.

Bird marsh saved
Environmentalists have thwarted plans by a town government in Yueyang to lease more than 250 hectares of wetlands - part of the Dongting lake - to farmers to grow lotus root, threatening a critical habitat for migratory birds, the China News Service reports. Following protests, higher-level authorities banned lotus harvesting in the marsh. The farmers say they face economic losses from their investment in the project. They were due to pay 3.7 million yuan a year for the lease to the wetlands.
Reward for fugitive 
Zhuzhou police have offered a 10,000 yuan reward for help in finding a fugitive who escaped from a hospital in the city, People.com.cn reports. The man, 31 and missing his left hand, was said to be "psychological unstable". The man was carrying a lot of cash with him and took a taxi, possibly heading to Jiangxi province. There was no other information about how he escaped.

Mobile prostitution ring
Police in Zhenjiang have arrested 23 suspects for using the internet and text messaging services to arrange meetings between sex workers and mobile phone users, People.com.cn reports. They made more than 540,000 yuan in illegal gains, it said. Another 46 people received fines or were detained.
Indian cancer drug bust
Nanjing police have arrested a couple who sold more than 400,000 yuan worth of cancer drugs online they had bought from India, the Jinling Evening News  reports. The couple worked for a telecoms company and travelled to India frequently. The Indian-made drugs are much cheaper than similar drugs sold in mainland hospitals and are popular with cancer patients. But drug safety authorities classify the drugs as fakes as they have not been tested on the mainland.

Wrong type of fun
Police in Xian took three minors into custody over the weekend for allegedly robbing a taxi driver, the Huashang Daily reports. It's alleged the three youths caught a taxi at about midnight, and threatened the driver with a knife, taking 321 yuan in total. The taxi driver escaped and alerted the police. The three were caught about an hour later hiding in a village. The boys said they had robbed the taxi for amusement.
Fumes kill family
Three people including a boy, 11, were killed by toxic gas at a deserted coal mine in a village outside Yulin on Saturday, the Huashang Daily reports. The tragedy unfolded after the boy disappeared into a two-metre-deep pit at the mine. His grandmother, 62, went into the pit to find him but was overcome by fumes. Villagers were unable to stop the boy's father from following them, and he also died. Authorities have launched an investigation.

Wildlife served up
Wild animals including endangered monkeys are being served at restaurants in Puer near the Sino-Vietnamese border, Kunming.cn reports. Endangered species on the menu include rhesus macaques and silver pheasants. The report said government vehicles were seen parked outside the restaurants. The government denied the claim and said they had launched a crackdown.
Boy, 17, remains missing
A high-school pupil in Zhaotong has been missing since last weekend, and his mother blames his teachers for his disappearance, Yunnan.cn reports. The principal ordered the boy, 17, to stand in class as punishment after he arrived 10 minutes late. The mother said the punishment made him leave home.
