Drugged driver jailed
A 42-year-old man who smashed his car into five others - including two police vehicles - while high on drugs has been jailed for five years and eight months for endangering public security, the Beijing Times reports. No one was injured in the incident in November last year. He was also fined 56,000 yuan (HK$70,000).
Traders resettle
More than 700 garment wholesalers who previously worked at a huge market in southern Beijing have relocated 140km away to Baoding in Hebei as part of the capital city's plan to limit its population growth, the Beijing Times reports. Some of the wholesalers said they planned to settle in Hebei where housing was much more affordable than Beijing. But others are worried their businesses will suffer.

Dad foils kidnappers
The head of a construction firm in Quangang district in Quanzhou kidnapped his partner's father in a bid to extort 20 million yuan from him, Fjsen.com reports. The kidnapper, surnamed Gu, and his associates carelessly left the father unattended, allowing him to untie his ropes and escape into a nearby village. Gu was later arrested and jailed for 12 years in what local police said was the most serious kidnapping case ever in Quangang.
Bus runs over woman
A woman in Fuzhou died under the wheels of a bus after she clipped the vehicle with her motor scooter and lost her balance, the Fuzhou Evening News reports. According to passengers, the bus driver did not even notice he had hit the woman until someone screamed at the sight of blood.

Business cheat jailed
A businessman has been jailed for 15 years in Lanzhou for fraud and misappropriation, People's Daily reports. Zhou Weijun, who operated private cemeteries among other businesses, defrauded 22 million yuan from two gravestone makers in Hebei and Fujian . He also illegally moved 20 million yuan of investors' assets. Zhou's personal wealth of 950,000 yuan was also confiscated.
Dating nightmare
A man has been arrested in remote Jinta county on charges of false imprisonment after he attempted to scam a woman he met online, Chinanews.com reports. The man had obtained money and jewellery by deceiving other women he met via an online dating site, but the victim in this case, named Wang, wanted to break up with him before his plan went through. He turned up at Wang's door with a knife and three bottles of pesticide, threatening to drink them if Wang ended the relationship. Wang endured threats and abuse from the man for more than two days before police arrived. He is awaiting trial.

Lost in the system
Hu Deming, 74, from Ruzhou , is unable to retire because the coal mine where he worked lost his employment records, Dahe Daily reports. Hu said that when he visited the Ministry of Social Security in 2000 after reaching retirement age, he was told that the documents were lost, so he could not receive a pension. Hu had struggled to get by with odd jobs ever since, the report said.
Deadly test drive
A test drive in Luoyang ended tragically when the brand new car ran off the road and hit a pole, killing a dealership employee and seriously injuring two customers, Dahe Daily reports. Police said the driver of the car was speeding. An unnamed car salesman said most dealerships did not buy full insurance to cover accidents during test drives.

Girl stabbed to death
A high-school girl was stabbed to death in public in Suqian , the Modern Express reports. A witness said the attacker first wounded a man near the victim before pushing the girl to the ground and slashing her repeatedly. The wounded man fetched police just as the killer tried to slit his own throat. The attacker, now in custody, was said to be from the victim's hometown.
Rebuke ends in assault
A man in Weian who was castigated by a woman for urinating in public followed her home and beat up her family, Chinanews.com reports. The man first slapped the woman twice as they argued in the street, then followed her to her shop where he beat up the family. The woman suffered a broken nose and jaw. The man was jailed for 10 months.

Elderly home probe
A home for elderly people in Shenyang has been accused of feeding sleeping pills to an 86-year-old woman on her first night in the facility, Dahe Daily reports. Helpers at the home, who are not medically qualified, said she disturbed other residents. They gave her medication that had not been prescribed by her doctor. The woman took three pills in total before she could fall asleep. Her son-in-law also complained to the local civil affairs bureau, which is investigating the case.
Disabled fees waived
The provincial education bureau will no longer charge disabled children tuition fees for primary and secondary education, starting from the autumn semester next year, Shenyang Daily reports. The pupils will also receive extra subsidies. Schools providing special education for disabled pupils will receive additional funding, according to the report.

Feral fugitive
Police in Zibo arrested a fugitive who had been on the run for four years, Iqilu.com reports. The man, whose original offence was not mentioned in the report, was found hiding in a cave on a mountain outside the city, where he survived on wild fruit and offerings of food to ancestors left at nearby gravesites. He also stole food from construction sites. Workers reported the thefts to police.

A 37-year-old woman in Dezhou asked police to put her age as 24 on her ID card after she started dating a 26-year-old man, Legal Daily reports. The woman claimed she had lost her ID card and said she was born in 1990 when she applied for a replacement at the local police bureau. She later admitted that she was 37 and divorced with a child. She told her boyfriend that she was 24 and the two were about to get married. That plan is off the table now that her real age has been exposed.

Beaten by wonder woman
A would-be jewellery shop robber, 35, was jailed for three years after he was subdued by a woman nearly twice his age, the China News Service reports. The man was threatening a shop assistant in Taizhou with a knife when he was stopped by an unarmed woman in her 60s. The woman was said to be quite strong because she exercised regularly. She subdued the man with help from neighbours and reported to him police. The man was also fined 3,000 yuan.
Seaplanes for island
Two amphibious passenger aircraft will enter service soon in the island city of Zhoushan , Xinhua reports. The US-made Cessna 208 Caravan planes carry nine passengers and a single pilot. The operators said flights between cities in Zhejiang would start before the end of this year, and fares would be lower than regular commercial flights.
