Shenzhen court considers verdict on foul-smelling landfill site near border with Hong Kong

A Shenzhen court is considering a verdict in the case of a disgruntled resident who demanded legal action against two branches of the city’s government over the “unbearable stink” from a local waste site.
The man, surnamed Shi, on Monday requested that Shenzhen’s Urban Management Bureau and Residential Environment Committee release an environmental impact assessment on the Xiaping Solid Waste Landfill, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
The site, located in Lo Wu district, has long enraged local residents because of its foul smell.
In June, dozens of angry residents from nearby areas staged a protest in front of the site’s entrance. Wearing face masks, the protesters held banners that called for it to close. They also handed a pennant that read “world’s most stinky waste site” to a landfill official.
During the hearing at Futian District Court, the Daily reported that the Urban Management Bureau said the site’s construction was overseen by the Construction Bureau, so it did not acquire an environmental assessment.
