The three most polluted rivers in the province are located in Shenzhen, according to a new study on Guangdong water quality, the Shenzhen Evening News reports. The five dirtiest are the Maozhou, Guanlan and Fengtang in Shenzhen; the Dushui in Zhaoqing ; and the Shijing in Guangzhou. Provincial authorities have invested heavily in a clean-up programme targeting 22 of the most heavily polluted rivers.

A Guangzhou court has ordered five drivers to pay compensation to the relatives of a man they ran over after it couldn't determine whether any of the drivers had actually killed him, the New Express reports. The man ran onto a highway and was struck by an unknown vehicle. The five drivers ran over his body and his blood was later found on the tyres of their vehicles. The Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou ordered them to pay a total of 575,000 yuan (HK$725,600) in compensation to the victim's relatives.
