Shenzhen's dirty rivers
The three most polluted rivers in the province are located in Shenzhen, according to a new study on Guangdong water quality, the Shenzhen Evening News reports. The five dirtiest are the Maozhou, Guanlan and Fengtang in Shenzhen; the Dushui in Zhaoqing ; and the Shijing in Guangzhou. Provincial authorities have invested heavily in a clean-up programme targeting 22 of the most heavily polluted rivers.
Five drivers make payout
A Guangzhou court has ordered five drivers to pay compensation to the relatives of a man they ran over after it couldn't determine whether any of the drivers had actually killed him, the New Express  reports. The man ran onto a highway and was struck by an unknown vehicle. The five drivers ran over his body and his blood was later found on the tyres of their vehicles. The Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou ordered them to pay a total of 575,000 yuan (HK$725,600) in compensation to the victim's relatives.

Dad held over stabbing
A man was arrested by police in Qingyuan county on Wednesday on suspicion of stabbing his 10-year-old son to death with scissors, Xinhua reports. The report said the man had suffered emotional problems since divorcing his wife in September. He had been working in another county, leaving the boy in the care of grandparents, and returned home on Tuesday.
Minimum wage boost
Shijiazhuang will raise its monthly minimum wage by 12 per cent to 1,480 yuan in a bid to attract workers and offset rising living costs, Hebnews.cn reports. The minimum pay for part-time workers will increase by 12 per cent to 15 yuan per hour, it said.

Hit-and-run driver caught
The driver of a BMW car involved in a hit-and-run in Zhengzhou was caught after people flooded police stations and a radio station with tips, the Zhengzhou Evening News reports. Police launched a citywide manhunt after the driver struck a sanitation worker and drove off at around 7.30am on Wednesday. A radio DJ mentioned the incident on-air and listeners called in with tips and made reports to police. The man was caught about one hour later.
Fake news scam
Two gangs with a total of 22 members have been busted by police in Luoyang for allegedly swindling dozens of local companies by pretending to be journalists, the Dahe Daily reports. The gangs set up two separate fake news websites last year and posted negative stories about the companies, it said. The companies were told they must pay a fee for the removal of the reports. About 40 companies were swindled out of a total of more than 2 million yuan, the report said.

Signs of rare leopard
Traces of an Amur leopard, one of the world's most endangered big cats, were found in Shulan , the news website Ce.cn quoted the city's forestry bureau as saying. Only about two dozen Amur leopards are thought to remain in the wild. Hair believed to be from an Amur was found at a local village where a cow weighing 300kg had been mauled to death, according to the report.
Watch passes internal test
A man in Changchun was sent to hospital two days after trying to commit suicide by swallowing one of his luxury watches, Chinajilin.com.cn reports. The man was discharged on Wednesday after surgery, and doctors said the watch was still working inside his stomach when they retrieved it.

Missing child report faked
A 46-year-old woman in Minhang district called police saying her "boy" had been kidnapped along with her dog but officers later learned her son was actually 25 and she just wanted help looking for the pet, Eastday.com reports. The woman told police a stranger driving a Buick had kidnapped her three-year-old son along with her Golden Retriever. She later admitted she had lied because she wanted officers to look for the pet. She was fined for public disorder.
Mum suffocates newborn
A 21-year-old woman was jailed for 11 years for killing her newborn right after giving birth, Eastday.com reports. The unmarried woman gave birth in a public toilet at her workplace in March. She said she lost control and suffocated the infant because she feared the cries might give away her secret to colleagues.

Jail for bus attacks
A 25-year-old man in Chengdu was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison for repeatedly throwing stones at buses, Morning.sc.cn reports. The man attacked seven buses between March and May, causing several windows to break and two passengers to be injured. The court said the man had no mental problems and attacked the buses to amuse himself.
Fatal tiff over dinner bill
A man is being tried for manslaughter in Chengdu after he allegedly killed his friend while they were fighting over a restaurant bill, Newssc.org reports. The friends dined together one night in July and were drunk by the time the bill came. Both wanted to pay for the meal, and their quarrel became physical. The friend allegedly died from one of the blows.
 
Yunnan
'Child traffickers' arrested
Police in Kunming arrested 32 suspects in a cross-border child-trafficking ring, China Central Television reports. Officers also rescued 11 infants. Members of the gang were related and had sold 21 babies. Using trains, they moved babies to Shandong , Henan and Fujian , according to the report. Police in Fuzhou in Fujian announced earlier this week they had busted a separate child-trafficking ring, leading to the arrest of 13 suspects and the rescue of seven children, Xinhua quoted local authorities as saying.
Visa-free scheme fails
Kunming's visa-free arrangement for foreign tourists hasn't helped attract many visitors, Kunming Daily reports. Since October 1, Kunming has allowed people from 45 countries to stay for up to three days without a visa. But so far, only three people have arrived under the scheme. Authorities say the policy needs to be better promoted.

Start date for rail link
A high-speed rail line linking Urumqi and Hami prefecture will begin operating on November 16, cutting travel time between the two centres from five hours to about three, Xinhua reports. The line is part of the 1,776km Lanzhou-Xinjiang high-speed line that stretches across Gansu and Qinghai provinces and Xinjiang .
'River protectors' hailed
An Urumqi couple in their 40s have been singled out in a nationwide poll about people who volunteer to protect rivers. They have been living in the Gobi Desert since 1996 and protect a local canal, a major water source for the capital, Iyaxin.com reports. The poll was organised by China National Radio and about 20 other media groups.
