The authorities in the municipality are considering making university students attend a course on setting up a business, the Chongqing Chen Bao reports. The proposal suggests they attend 32 hours of lessons, with classes on subjects such as creating a business plan and assessing commercial risk. About 10,000 students would also be given a small subsidy to be trained in business innovation.
Girl, 3, wakes from coma
A three-year-old girl from Wushan county has regained consciousness after being in a coma for a year, the Chongqing Chen Bao reports. She fell from the roof of a one-storey house and has brain injuries. Her mother has been at her bedside over the past year telling her stories and singing songs in the hope that it would help her recover. The family is now short of money after spending more than 400,000 yuan (HK$505,000) to pay for the girl's medical treatment.

Mistress sued for cash
A man and his wife are suing his former mistress in Guangzhou for the 3.2 million yuan he allegedly gave her during their affair, the New Express reports. The man and the mistress lived together for about a decade but broke up earlier this year after he found out she had relationships with other men. A ruling in the case has yet to be announced. The man owned a photographic studio and his mistress used to work at the business, the report said.
Mother kills son, 10
A woman in Shenzhen has turned herself in to the police, saying she killed her 10-year-old son by putting sleeping pills in his food, Dahe Daily reports. The divorced woman in her 40s said she was too poor to raise the boy and killed him in despair. Police went to her home and found the boy dead.
Henan
Son defrauds father, 75
The adopted son of a 75-year-old man from Zhengzhou falsely told the authorities the pensioner was dead and then sold two of his flats without telling him, Dahe Daily reports. The elderly man only recently discovered that the fraud was carried out four years ago. The authorities said action would be taken against the son.
Row over dog on bus
A woman who broke regulations by taking a dog on a bus in Zhengzhou refused to get off and started arguing with the driver, Dahe Daily reports. She said she had already paid her fare and her pet had no diseases and should be allowed to travel. The woman and the driver argued for about 10 minutes before the driver reimbursed her fare out of his own pocket and she got off the bus, the report said.

Pregnant thief raids dorm
A woman was arrested in Xiangyin county near Yueyang for allegedly stealing 14,000 yuan from more than 40 rooms in a girls' dormitory at a middle school, the Xiao Xiang  Chen Bao reports. The 24-year-old is under house arrest because she is pregnant. She said she stole the money so her boyfriend could buy drugs and gamble. The man has been detained for allegedly instigating the crime.
Dereliction of duty
Six officials working for the urban planning and water resources authorities in Leiyang have been prosecuted for dereliction of duty after the media revealed that permission was given for an eight-storey housing block to be built in a dangerous position close to a riverbank, the news website Voc.com.cn reports. Building work on the project started two years ago but has not been completed. The court had yet to announce verdicts in the cases, the report said.

Man kills wife, himself
A man suffering from depression stabbed his wife and himself to death at a market in Jilin city , the New Cultural Express reports. They both died at the scene. They ran a stall at the market, the report said. Witnesses said that before the killings on Tuesday the man repeatedly murmured: "I don't want to live any longer."
Leopard attacks sheep
Experts from the province's forestry science institute have confirmed that a large animal that attacked eight sheep at a village near Jilin city last week was a rare Amur leopard, the news website Chinanews.com reports. It is thought the attacks might be by the same animal that killed a cow about 25km away last month. The report said there were thought to be up to 15 of the leopards in the province. They are a critically endangered species and also live in eastern Russia.

Boy dies in manhole fall
A four-year-old boy died after falling down an uncovered manhole in Songjiang district, the Oriental Morning Post reports. His body was recovered about five hours after he fell, and water was drained from a pipeline to recover the body. The boy was reportedly playing near a construction site where workers were repairing a road and had forgotten to cover the manhole. The boy did not have an adult with him at the time.
Disabled taxis 'too dear'
Disabled people have complained that London-style large taxis that were introduced in the city last month, partly to help those with disabilities, are hard to book and more expensive than other taxis, the Shanghai Morning Post reports. The municipal disabled people's federation said it was considering offering subsidies to disabled passengers to use the vehicles. There are about 50 of the taxis in operation in the city and a state-owned taxi operator said it planned to introduce 150 more next year.

Fire risks at home
About 80 per cent of fires in the municipality occur in homes, according to the municipality's firefighting department, the City Express reports. The main causes are unextinguished cigarettes, electrical faults in household appliances and untended household fires. More fires also started during winter as more fuel was used at home, the report said. The fire service has just held a safety awareness campaign in the municipality.
Adopt-a-tree scheme
The authorities in Wuqing district have set up a scheme for the public to "adopt" 128 old trees in the area to help protect them, the Mei Ri Xin Bao reports. The trees are at least 100 years old. Members of the public can pay 800 yuan to adopt a tree for three years. Companies and institutions can do so for 8,000 yuan.
Xinjiang
Debtors named, shamed
The names of 45 people who defaulted on their debts were beamed onto electronic display screens in major commercial areas of Urumqi , the Xinjiang City News reports. The initiative comes from a local court and the aim is to shame people into paying up. Details of defaulters will be published by the court every fortnight. Among the punishments for people who fail to meet court orders to pay off debts is a ban on buying a house.
Row over gas charge
Regulators in Kashgar prefecture have ordered the local gas company to stop making retailers pay 3,000 yuan deposits to use its service after complaints that the upfront charge was excessive, the news website Ts.cn reports. The company said the aim was to prevent people defaulting on their gas bills. Some retailers' deposits will be returned.
