Brother is groomed
A young man in Hefei had to get his brother to stand in for him at his wedding reception while he was detained by police for stealing just two days before the big day, Ahwang.cn reports. The date had been set for the wedding and police would not release the man, 24, for the day.
Mother drowns son
A mother in Hefei was formally arrested for allegedly drowning her two-year-old autistic son, the Anhui Business News reports. The woman immersed the boy in a barrel of water at home after he woke up from his nap and kept crying on April 2. She told police that she continued doing her laundry after the child stopped crying, before drying him, trimming his toenails and taking a half-hour nap. She called police after waking up and realising the boy was dead.

Shenzhen tops wage list
The average monthly salary in Shenzhen stands at 7,260 yuan (HK$9,160), the highest in the province, with Guangzhou following on 6,830 yuan, the New Express reports citing a report by recruiter Job168.com The ninth annual report, based on a survey of more than 1.8 million workers in 300 positions and 34 industries, said the average salary in Guangdong rose 4 per cent in the past year. The top five cities also included Foshan , Huizhou and Dongguan .
Porn surprise
An "interactive learning machine" a Guangzhou mother bought her children turned out to contain adult movies, the Southern Metropolis News reports. She didn't realise it until this week, more than a month after she bought the toy, when she came home to find her three children, aged two to six, watching pornography. The retailer said that since the machine was not linked to the internet, the movies must have been copied to the machine by another person before she bought it.

Student donates wages
A college student in Wuhan has held down a series of part-time jobs to raise more than 10,000 yuan for poor middle-school students in his hometown, a mountainous village in Qichun county, the Chutian Jin Bao reports. The 21-year-old made 1,600 yuan a month working in restaurants and dormitories, collecting recyclable waste, handing out brochures and doing private tutoring in his spare time. He said he came from a poor family and wished that more children like him could attend university.
Luxury goods haul
Wuhan customs officers raided a local company that smuggled 200 million yuan worth of luxury products, the Chutian Jin Bao reports. The haul of 37,000 or so items included clothes, bags and shoes made by Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. The products would have attracted 30 million yuan in taxes. The company, which has five shops in Wuhan and another in Shiyan , had smuggled the products from Hong Kong with false documents since 2011, the report said.

A bridge far out
The authorities have given the green light for the world's longest and tallest glass-bottomed bridge to be built in the Zhangjiajie Scenic Area, the China News Service reports. The bridge would span 430 metres and be 6 metres wide when it was completed by June, the authorities said. The area is noted for breathtaking scenery and is said to have inspired the setting for the Hollywood blockbuster Avatar. It also has hair-raising cliff-side walking trails and cable car rides.
Wedding plans interrupted
A runaway convict has been arrested in Yiyang after he took his fiancée to the civil affairs office to get married, the Xiaoxiang Morning News  reported. When asked for his proof of identity, the man, only identified by his family name Xiao, told the clerk he had lost his national ID card and would like to apply for a new one. When he walked over to the police counter to apply for his card, an officer put Xiao's details into a computer, which quickly identified him as a fugitive. He was arrested on the spot.

Funds for Muslim villages
Twelve Muslim villages in the northwestern autonomous region have been selected for special protection and development under a national campaign to conserve minority cultures, Nxnews.net reports. The region has invested more than 400 million yuan in 20 Muslim villages for upgrade projects, tourism development and environmental protection since 2009, according to the region's ethnic affairs commission.
Hotpot restaurant blast
Ten people were injured in an explosion at a hotpot restaurant in Yinchuan on Thursday, People.com.cn reports. The victims included eight restaurant workers and two passers-by, one of whom was seriously injured, the report said. Police were investigating the cause.

Shear danger
Five villagers in Pingyi county have been detained for causing serious pollution by illegally refining minerals from scrap metal, the Qilu Evening News reports. Over the past six years, the villagers soaked used blades in a mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acid to extract the silicon carbide and copper powder used in their coating. The highly corrosive fluid was poured into local ponds after processing while the mineral powder was sold at the local market.
Foxy villagers
Villagers in Linyi have been buying dead foxes and processing the carcasses to be sold as lamb, donkey or dog meat in Dezhou , Inner Mongolia and Jiangsu , Shandong Television reports. Fox farms usually start slaughtering the animals for their fur in November and the carcasses are sold cheaply. The villagers processed about 100 tonnes of fox meat a day. Each villager could earn about 100,000 yuan each winter, the report said.

Rumour-monger jailed
The head of a private IT company has been jailed for two years and nine months for defamation, Xinhua reports. The unnamed executive, 48, was found guilty of creating and spreading online rumours about officials and other executives. In one case, he claimed a district official had taken more than 2 billion yuan in bribes, owned more than 60 houses, had 10 mistresses and was a murderer.
Phone traffic hazard
Drivers using mobile phones were the top cause of fatal road accidents in the municipality in the first 10 months this year, Xinmin.cn reports. Traffic police said on Thursday that 30 per cent of 690 fatal accidents between January and October were caused by drivers using their phones. Drink driving, the previous major cause of road accidents, accounted for less than 3 per cent of the accidents during this period.

Historic temple razed
The ancient Fulong Temple in Taiyuan burned to the ground early on Thursday, the China News Service reports. The temple was first built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550-577AD) and was renovated most recently in 2008. The cause is being investigated.
Poverty fund plundered
More than a quarter of the province's 2 billion yuan poverty-alleviation fund for last year was embezzled or improperly managed, the Shanxi Evening News reports. Some 400 people had been implicated in the embezzlement of 570 million yuan, the report said.
