Parent-teacher associations should be set up at all primary and middle schools in the capital by the end of next year, Beijing Youth Daily reports. The city's education authority said the aim was to help improve the management of schools. The associations will advise on major decisions, especially those directly related to the interests of pupils. About 70 per cent of schools in the capital have so far set up parent-teacher associations.
Row led to fatal fire
A couple has stood trial in the capital after the wife set fire to a bedsheet during a marital row and the resulting blaze killed two of their neighbours, the news website People.com.cn reports. The woman started the fire to "arouse the man's attention", but neither of them tried to put it out and the blaze spread. They lived in a flat shared by 10 people. Two neighbours did not escape from the fire and died from breathing in poisonous smoke, the report said. The court has yet to announce a verdict in the case.

Checks on home help
A service has been set up in Fuzhou to allow people to do background checks before hiring maids, the Southeast Express reports. The service is run by an industry association and has information on about 10,000 maids. The report said it was the first service of its kind on the mainland. It also had a blacklist of maids deemed to be poor at their work, the report said.
Freed but denied passport
A man who was cleared of poisoning two children after spending eight years in jail says he still cannot get a passport as he is listed by the police as a criminal suspect, the news website Thepaper.cn reports. Nian Bin's conviction for the killings was quashed in Fuzhou earlier this year after he had spent years on death row. A police official promised to look into the matter. Nian said during his appeal that his confession had been obtained through torture.

'Counterfeiters' caught
Two men and a woman in Haikou have been arrested for allegedly forging counterfeit notes, the Southern Metropolis News reports. About 50,000 yuan (HK$62,000) in fake notes were seized. The group was often seen driving luxury cars and spending a lot of cash. They were arrested after they used a fake note to pay a car park fee and the matter was reported to the police.
'Uncivilised' tourists
Tourists are washing their feet and scrubbing their shoes at a fountain in a famous beauty spot on the island, the news website Youth.cn reports. Other tourists visiting the Tianyahaijiao scenic zone have complained that the behaviour is uncivilised. The website report said the authorities had not taken action to crack down on the tourists.

Big sturgeon landed
A fisherman in Wuhan caught a Chinese sturgeon that was more than 3.3 metres long and weighed 350kg, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. The fish, which the report said was the biggest sturgeon found in the Yangtze River in the past two decades, had injuries to its nose, tail and skin, and was sent to a fisheries research institute in Jingzhou for treatment. The fish is a rare species on the mainland and is protected by law. Experts said they were not sure if the fish was wild or had been bred in captivity. Experts say that only several hundred of the fish might still be living wild in the Yangtze, according to the newspaper report.
Fugitive back behind bars
A man who escaped from prison 20 years ago after carrying out a rape in the province has been re-arrested, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. The man was tracked down to Hainan Island . He was sentenced to six years in jail in 1994 after he broke into a woman's house and attacked her. He escaped after serving only a month of his sentence. He is now back behind bars in Xianning. A police officer pretended to flirt with the man on social media to help track him down, according to the report.

Held for beating wife
A man from Minhe county was given 10 days' detention and fined 500 yuan for hitting his wife with a belt and a long ruler over three days last month, the Haidong Times reports. He admitted the assaults and said he suspected her of having an affair. Police and the local women's federation pledged to do more public education programmes to warn against domestic violence.
River clean-up project
Xining has invested 5.8 billion yuan in cleaning up the Beichuan River over the past two years by relocating people living along its edge, draining silt, repairing banks and planting trees, the Xining  Evening  News reports. Another 2 billion yuan is needed to complete the project, which is expected to be finished by the end of next year. Some of the money for the work came from the World Bank.

Craving for culture
A survey has suggested that 90 per cent of primary and middle school pupils in the city's Xuhui district are interested in traditional Chinese culture, but most of them do not have a deep understanding of it because they have little spare time after doing homework and going to extra classes, Jiefang Daily reports. Most had read the four most famous novels in traditional Chinese literature, including A Dream of Red Mansions and Journey to the West, but only about 3 per cent had read ancient works such as The Analects of Confucius. About 1,000 pupils were polled, the report said.
Killed by quack doctors
The municipal health authority has investigated 11 cases so far this year in which patients died after being treated by unlicensed doctors, the news website Jfdaily.com reports. In one incident a woman died on the spot when receiving an injection at an illegal clinic in Pudong district. A total of 1,664 unlicensed medical clinics have been closed this year. The authority said the small illegal clinics were in suburban areas and many patients still visited them despite knowing they were unlicensed.

Fight over tuition cash
A 70-year-old man from Chengdu claims he was hit in the face by a residential community committee official, the news website People.com.cn reports. The old man was applying for government tuition subsidies for his grandson, claiming the family was poor, but an argument started after the official said he needed to provide more details. The pensioner's left eye was swollen in the attack. He has refused the offer of 500 yuan from the committee to cover his medical bills, saying it cost him much more to treat his injuries.
Tourism guide published
The English version of an official tour guide Discovering Sichuan was published on Friday, Sichuan Daily reports. The book, complied by the tourism and transport authorities, lists 100 top tourist destinations in the province. Most of the sites were close to Sichuan's network of expressways.

Illegal factories found
Among the 53 timber furniture manufacturers in Kunming's Panlong district, 46 do not have a business license, the City Times reports. Government inspectors have either shut them down or ordered them to put their businesses in order and apply. In one factory the owner's family and four of its workers were living on the premises.
School romance ban
Two pupils at a high school in Xiangyun county near Dali have dropped out of class after the school said they could not continue to go out with each other because it was against campus rules, the news website Yunnan.cn reports. The two children's parents have backed them in leaving the school. Teachers had tried several times to stop them seeing each other. Staff said the relationship had a bad influence on the school.
