An illegal money changer in the capital has been cheated out of about 370,000 yuan (HK$467,000) after he exchanged cash for two European-looking men and it turned out their notes were counterfeit, The Beijing News reports. The foreigners said they had euros to change after meeting the money changer on the street. He then took their cash to the bank and was told it was fake. The money changer reported the incident to the police, even though he knew he would be punished. Police are investigating.

A fugitive who has been on the run for 17 years after he allegedly conducted a series of robberies and killed two people has been arrested in the capital, the Beijing Times reports. The man from Hebei province is said to have carried out the crimes in 1997 before fleeing to Inner Mongolia . He was caught after his girlfriend reported him missing, helping the police to track him down. He left her after she said she wanted to get married. Charges are to be filed against the man.
