Poor couple on trial for selling children; Teen leaps to death after cheating accusation

A security guard at a residential compound in the capital and his wife were attacked by at least five people after the guard stopped a man from urinating in public, reports. Witnesses said there was a public toilet less than 20 metres away from the building but the man refused to go there. After the guard tried to stop him, the man called over another three men and two women and they pushed the couple against a wall and hit and kicked them for at least two minutes. Residents called the police.

A couple from Sichuan have gone on trial in Shunyi district for selling three of their five children, the reports. They could not afford to raise the children and were caught by police in Beijing as they tried to sell the youngest child, a baby girl, for 7,000 yuan (HK$8,800). Two other people who were involved in the case were earlier sentenced to six and five years in jail for child trafficking.

A 20-year-old student at Fujian Medical University has been found dead in her dormitory, the reports. Her roommates said they heard deep breathing and screams at about 5am. They also saw her body twitch and called an ambulance. Doctors arrived but said she was already dead. The student's friends said there had been nothing abnormal about her and they had not heard of her taking any medication. The university had closed and sealed off the dormitory building while the police carried out an investigation into the woman's death, the report said.

Prosecutors in Xiangcheng district in Zhangzhou are to try a young couple for allegedly trying to sell a flat they did not own, the reports. After hearing that a lawyer wanted to buy a flat near his child's school, the couple sold the attorney the apartment they rented. They took a down payment of more than 200,000 yuan and disappeared with the cash when the lawyer asked for the ownership documents. They were later arrested.

A man from Lufeng has been sentenced to five years in jail for stabbing his eight-months-pregnant ex-girlfriend, causing her to have the baby prematurely, the reports. He stabbed his girlfriend last September with a fruit knife because he suddenly doubted the child was his.

A 13-year-old girl in Nanyang jumped off a building and died four days later after she was accused of cheating in an exam, reports. She left a letter, which the police are examining. The girl's father said she was a top student in class, but her maths teacher suspected she had cheated. She was laughed at by her classmates and jumped off the building later that day.

A man returned 2,200 yuan he found, made a silk banner praising himself and posted a photograph of it online, reports. Many internet users criticised his lack of modesty and said he had made a publicity stunt out of returning the money. The man, aged 27 and from Zhumadian , found a wallet on a table at a restaurant and managed to track the owner down himself rather than hand the cash over to the police. He said his aim in making the banner was to improve the image of people from Henan .

A man in his 20s from Nanjing allegedly sexually assaulted three women after he was teased for not having a girlfriend when he was at school, the reports. Police said the man stalked his victims for about a week so he could get to know their daily routine.

The authorities in Zhenjiang have suspended a street inspector who was filmed yelling that his job was to bully ordinary people, the news website People.cn reports. A video of the man shouting at a street peddler went viral online. The inspector said he was part of the Communist Party system and if the peddler had a problem he should sue him. He was ordered to apologise.

A man was found unconscious on an icy street in Taiyuan after he had a row with his wife and stormed out into the cold in just a vest, reports. Police later found him collapsed by the road and took him to hospital. He came round about six hours later.

A man from Xiaoyi allegedly pretended to be a well-connected journalist and cheated people out of 2 million yuan, saying that he could introduce them to senior Communist Party officials, the reports. A businessman from Sichuan paid him 300,000 yuan for the service, but later realised he had been deceived and called the police.

A former director of a bank has been arrested by the police in Neijiang over an alleged fraud two years ago, the reports. The man, 49, was found at a temple in the city and said he had been hiding out there since the alleged offence.

Police found more than 600,000 yuan in stolen cash at a couple's home in Chengdu , the news website Newssc.org reports. The couple admitted to carrying out burglaries in several provinces, including Sichuan and Guangdong.

A pedestrian crossing in Wenzhou has installed a bar to stop people walking across the road when the light is red, the reports. The report said it was the first of its kind on the mainland. The bar goes up when the light turns green.
