Teacher ties up pupil, 8
A primary school teacher in Guangzhou went missing after he tied up an eight-year-old pupil as punishment, the New Express reports. The boy told his parents the teacher bound his hands and feet when he refused to take a nap with other pupils, and then made him kneel in the bathroom. The teacher also put socks in his mouth to muffle his cries for 30 minutes until he was found by another teacher. Police are searching for the teacher.
Murder reprieve
A Dongguan woman was acquitted of murdering her boyfriend after it was revealed the couple made a suicide pact, the Yangcheng Evening News reports. Following an argument, the woman asked the man to keep his vow to look after her for the rest of her life. The man refused, saying that was only possible if they committed suicide together. The two used a fruit knife to first stab the man and then cut the woman's wrist. She later regained consciousness and called police and an ambulance. Doctors were unable to save her boyfriend. The court dropped the charges, saying her crime was minor, she had turned herself in and had a child to support.

Modified for mum
A man in Luoyang has remodelled his SUV to make it easier for his ageing mother to travel with him, the China News Service reports. Kang Yawei dismantled the back seats of the car he bought last year and installed a makeshift bed. He said this made trips for his 82-year-old mother, who has knee problems, more comfortable. His mum was able to nap in the bed from time to time on their 12-hour drives to Shandong province.
Pyramid scam busted
Police in Kaifeng have broken up a multilevel marketing organisation called the "1040 project", arresting 46 organisers and "educating" more than 300 participants, Dahe Daily reports. The organisation told members that after making a one-time investment of 69,800 yuan (HK$88,000) and introducing three lower-level members, they could earn a 10 million yuan gratuity plus 40,000 yuan a year. The scam generated more than 50 million yuan and spread to about 20 provinces. Organisers told members to keep their involvement in the project secret because it involved national security.

You only lie thrice
A worker at a steam turbine factory in Hongshan district pretended to be a secret service agent to defraud five women in their 20s, the Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. Police allege that the 57-year-old man, inspired by James Bond movies, used fake identities to fleece thousands of yuan from his victims, sexually assaulting two of them. Police also discovered that the suspect had served a total of 15 years for similar offences committed in 2001, 2008 and 2012, the report said.
Student power
A woman who heads the students union at the Wuhan Textile University has won a campus competition for pulling an electric vehicle carrying 12 passengers, the Wuhan Evening News reports. She took only 27 seconds to drag the vehicle weighing nearly a tonne to the finish line.

Boyfriend survives plot
A man narrowly survived an attack planned by his girlfriend of six months, the Modern Express reports. One of the attackers told police that the girlfriend asked him to teach the man, Zhang Jun, a lesson, a claim she has denied. The attacker said he paid another man 5,000 yuan to help out. The two entered Zhang's home, bashed him over the head, stabbed his eyes and threw him into a river with weights tied to his body. Despite his wounds, Zhang was able save himself. The girlfriend is on bail and the attacker was arrested for attempted murder.
The learning game
A father in Changzhou has told his son that he can play as many online games as he wants as long as it doesn't affect his eyesight or his school grades, the Modern Express reports. Father and son have played computer games together for more than five years. The son,12, plays games for about 20 minutes a day and is top of his class, according to the report. But the dad is not sure if the games improved the son's grades.

Payout for HIV passengers
China Spring Airlines has paid a total of 87,000 yuan to two passengers with HIV and a volunteer carer after they were not allowed to board a flight in July, the Southern Metropolis News reports. The HIV sufferers each received 36,000 yuan and the carer 15,000 yuan in return for withdrawing the complaint, the report said.
Waiter stabs chef
A waiter in Shenyang has been jailed for three years for wounding the chef at the restaurant he worked at, the Shenyang Evening News reports. The waiter, surnamed Xu, stabbed the chef in the chest and leg after he was served day-old fried rice for the staff supper. When Xu asked for fresh rice, the cook refused and the two began to fight. Xu pleaded guilty in court and said he would not appeal against the decision, according to the report.
SHAANXI
Teachers stab pupils
Two kindergarten teachers in Xianyang have been arrested for stabbing pupils with hypodermic needles, the Huashang Daily reports. When a parent found seven blood spots on her son's leg, the boy said they were inflicted by his teachers. Police found that the pair had abused at least five children at the kindergarten, which has since closed. Both were jailed for 15 days and fined 1,000 yuan.
Mum abets rape
A court in Weicheng has jailed a man for four years and a woman for 17 months for the rape of the woman's 19-year-old daughter, Cnwest.com reports. The man and the woman met online, where the man offered to introduce her to his cousin, who was interested in a relationship. But before meeting the cousin, the man said a feng shui master claimed that the daughter could destroy the relationship due to her strong "female spirit", which he had to neutralise with his "male spirit". The mother helped the man to rape her daughter. The man later said his cousin had died.
SICHUAN
Father on probation
An elderly father has been handed a three-year jail sentence suspended for four years in Qionglai for intentional injury leading to the death of his son, the  Chengdu Economic Daily reports. More than 200 people signed a petition asking the court to show leniency to Huang Maoshong, 77. They said Huang was frequently abused by the son. After one argument, the father picked up a fruit knife and killed him. Before it handed down the light sentence, the court said it took Huang's age and the son's behaviour into consideration, according to the report.
Hit-and-run conviction
A driver from Pi county has been jailed for 21/2 years over a fatal hit-and-run accident, the Chengdu Economic Daily reports. The man's phone fell under the seat while he was driving. As he tried to get the phone, he accidentally turned the wheel and hit a father and daughter riding a motorcycle in the opposite direction. The daughter later died in hospital. The driver drove away but was later convinced by friends to turn himself in. The driver paid more than 100,000 yuan to the victim's family.
ZHEJIANG
Caught red-handed
Police have caught an extortionist who burgled a studio housing paintings and other artworks in Yuhuan district three times this month, the Qianjiang Evening News reports. After the third time, the thief left a letter demanding the owner, surnamed Zheng, transfer money to his account or suffer further break-ins. The thief even left his bank account number on the letter. After waiting for the thief for two nights, police caught him near the studio after midnight, carrying a crowbar. The man was arrested, according to the report.
Baby left on train
A baby was found abandoned in a bag on a train from Chengdu to Hangzhou , the Qianjiang Evening News reports. A passenger found the bag but was afraid to open it because of the "strange, cat-like sounds" coming out of it, and called railway police. Officers found the weeks-old infant with a set of clothes, a can of infant formula and a feeding bottle but nothing to identify her parents. Passengers provided some clues that suggested the infant had been left by two women, the report said. The baby has been taken into government care.
