Drink-driver 'protected'
Communist Party officials have blocked attempts to arrest a cadre for alleged drink-driving and insulting police officers, the China Youth Daily reports. The investigation has been hindered because the village official from Zhouning county near Ningde is a member of the local People's Congress. The report said police officers were angry that the official might evade punishment and they might appeal to higher levels of government to intervene.
Killed over tortured cat
An 18-year-old factory worker from Nanchang allegedly stabbed to death one of his colleagues living in his dormitory because he had tortured his cat, the news website Nhaidu.com reports. Another colleague, who had constantly used the man's mobile phone, was seriously injured in the same attack. The man who was killed had tied the cat's feet and nearly drowned it. The suspect has been arrested and faces a murder charge.

Bank robber forced to wait
A man rushed up to a bank counter in Heyuan waving a chopper but was forced to wait after calm-headed staff ignored him, the news website People.com.cn reports. After other customers had left, an employee turned to the robber and asked him for his bank card. He then dutifully entered his PIN and was told he had only 1 yuan remaining in his account. He demanded 10,000 yuan to be transferred but the staff refused. He fled and was later arrested.
Threat to kill family
A man in Guangzhou holding his two young sons threatened to jump off a building after quarrelling with his wife, the Southern Metropolis Daily reports. The man, 27, refused to come down and release his sons, aged three and six, but he was finally persuaded after he spoke to his wife on the phone.

Speechless over arrest
A woman in Xinxiang was in shock, sent to hospital and unable to speak after police mistakenly arrested and handcuffed her for taking drugs, the Dahe Daily reports. Officers later realised their mistake, but the woman, 40, was already receiving medical treatment. The police chief has apologised and promised to cover her medical expenses.
Help for burn victim
A woman in her 20s who suffered severe burns to her face in an accident when she was a toddler has received free plastic surgery at a hospital in Zhengzhou , the Henan Business Daily reports. She was injured in a fire when she was two and has covered up the right side of her face since. Some of her schoolmates taunted her, calling her a monster, but she studied hard and became a teacher at a school for the disabled. Officials at a hospital decided to offer her free plastic surgery to reconstruct her face after they heard her story.

Schoolgirl missing
A 14-year-old girl from Zhangjiagang has been missing for a week after her parents scolded her for her poor performance at school, the Modern Express reports. The parents described their daughter as a quiet girl who liked to play video games. The girl lives with her mother after her parents divorced. The mother said she regretted her harsh attitude and wanted to make amends after her daughter was found. Police are searching for the girl.
Row over eating on bus
A man eating snacks on a bus in Suzhou was beaten by another passenger, the Yangtse Evening Post reports. The man was eating sunflower seeds and threw the pieces on the floor. Another passenger tried to stop him and the two started arguing. Bus staff managed to pull them apart. Footage of the incident was posted online. Internet users criticised the pair for eating on a bus and for brawling.

Sex attacker beaten
A man who tried to sexually assault a student in Nanchang was beaten back because the victim had studied the martial art taekwondo, the Jiangxi Daily reports. The student reported to her college that a strange man approached her while she was studying alone in a classroom at night. He tried to touch her hair, but when she remonstrated he grabbed hold of her and covered her mouth. The girl fought back using taekwondo and the man fled. The college called the police to search for the man and have published a notice warning students about the offender.
Lonely girl kidnap story
A young girl from Pingxiang made up a story alleging criminals had tried to abduct her because she missed her migrant-worker parents and hoped it would make them come home, the news website Jxnews.com.cn reports. Her grandmother called the police saying her granddaughter had said she had escaped from a kidnap gang who had tied her up. After questioning, the police realised the girl had made the story up. Police have asked her parents to visit their daughter, who is of pre-school age, more often.

Man slits throat in fall
A man died in a freak accident after he slipped on a bathroom floor in a hostel, smashed a porcelain toilet and a sharp shard cut his throat, the Huashang Daily reports. Police were called by the hostel in Zichang county near Yanan and the bathroom floor was found covered in blood. The owner of the hostel has disappeared, but the report did not say if he is thought to have been involved in the accident.
Plea for euthanasia
The family of a four-year-old girl from Xianyang who is terminally ill with eye cancer, is calling for euthanasia to be made legal on the mainland to end their daughter's suffering, the Legal Evening News reports. The girl has a malignant tumour in her left eye and the cancer has spread. Her parents said there should a legal way to end their daughter's pain.

Air purifier on the move
An Italian man working in Chengdu has modified an air purifier so he can carry it in a backpack and use it when he cycles to work to stop breathing in polluted air, the West China City Daily reports. The man spent 1,500 yuan to modify the machine which is attached by a tube to his nose and mouth. Photographs of him have been posted online. Some want him to share how he did it, while others have questioned whether the equipment works.
Child kept out of school
A nine-year-old girl living in a village near Mianyang has been forced by her family to do lots of housework and barred her from going to school, the Sichuan Daily reports. Neighbours reported the matter to the authorities to help the child. The girl has to cook, clean the house and feed the pigs. She lives with her grandparents after her mother left home and her father works away from the village. The authorities said they would talk to the girl's family.
 
Yunnan
No cash for transplant
A farmer in Wenshan is treating his six-year-old daughter's serious blood disorder by burning Chinese herbs by her bed because he cannot afford her medical treatment, the Huashang Daily reports. His daughter has thalassaemia and needs a bone marrow transplant costing 300,000 yuan, but he only earns 4,000 yuan a year. He learned about the traditional treatment in an ancient Chinese medicine book. The family's plight has been discussed on social media, with some internet users calling for donations to help the girl.
Rare tigers born at zoo
A Siberian tiger has given birth to five cubs at a zoo in Kunming , the news website Yunnan.cn reports. Two of the cubs were weak at birth and have received care in a nursery. The zoo's manager said about 60 lions and tigers had been born at the site this year. Siberian tigers are an endangered species.
