People are stealing garbage cans from the streets of Dalian, the second largest city in China’s Liaoning province, to pickle food, Sina news reported on Tuesday.

The city spent more than 8 million yuan (HK$10 million) this year to install 16,300 new garbage cans, some of which are made of high quality stainless steel. But more than 250 have been stolen or vandalised since they were installed in May. Some later turned up near residential buildings where they were used to pickle vegetables, said Sina.

The sanitation department in Dalian laments the financial loss. “Thieves would sell a stainless can worth 750 yuan for 50 yuan,” a sanitary official said.
Some others hauled the bins to their own buildings to collect garbage.

The city is offering 200 yuan rewards for tips on vandalism and theft of the garbage cans.
