A 14-year-old Tibetan boy died after self-immolating, Xinhua reported yesterday. The teen, identified by the name Karpongya, died in Tongren town in northwest Qinghai province - an area which has seen a wave of self-immolation protests against Beijing's rule in Tibet. He is the 10th person to set themselves on fire since the eve of the Communist Party's 18th national congress last week. AFP

 

Eight people died and 20 were injured in a construction site accident in Shaanxi province, local authorities said yesterday. Twenty-eight construction workers were buried under a cement reinforcement cage when it collapsed at a site operated by the Simengou mining company in Shenmu county, Yulin city, sources said. All the victims were pulled out of the debris within a few hours. One died at the scene, while another seven died in hospital. The injured are in stable condition. Xinhua

 

The Ministry of Education has set up an office in charge of preschool education to improve administration and professional quality in the sector. The ministry has issued a circular concerning adjustments for its internal divisions, including the establishment of offices in charge of preschool education, special education for handicapped children and continuing education, the reported yesterday. According to the circular, the preschool education office will be responsible for policies and development plans as well as the formulation of quality standards and basic requirements for kindergarten education.
