The boy had been “beaten mercilessly” on the buttocks with a metre-long wooden stick on December 28 after he had forgotten to bring an activity book to school, the Henan-based Dahe News website reported on Tuesday.

The child’s grandmother found out about the incident after seeing scars and bruises on his buttocks while bathing him that evening. The child’s mother went to the school on Wednesday morning seeking an explanation.

One of the teachers responsible for the beating, surnamed Wang, said the child was usually “very introverted”, but he admitted he might have been too “heavy-handed” dealing with him. Wang said he cared about the boy and the punishment was for his own good, according to the news report.

The principal of the school said the two teachers were only recruited this year and he had made them apologise to the parents of the children.

A teacher interviewed at the school told reporters the two kindergarten teachers did not have any professional teaching qualifications, which is common among kindergarten staff in Huangchuan.
