Chinese and Indian senior military officials agreed to strengthen ties during a meeting yesterday in Beijing. The talks were held between Xu Qiliang, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, and Indian Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma, who said he was confident of progress in military relations between the two countries.

A senior official of Beijing's second airport said the central government had approved the project, with construction expected to start next year and be completed in 2018, the Beijing News reported. Fifteen swans died after being poisoned in Hunan province, officials said yesterday. Police said the poison was placed near the wetlands of Dongting Lake and they were gathering evidence to arrest the suspects. Thirty-one teal also died in the nature reserve. Xinhua
