'Diaoyu Island fish' sells out in Shanghai
The Diaoyu Island dispute is not only good for whipping up nationalistic sentiment; it is also good for sales.
Patrotic Chinese shoppers in Shanghai expressed their support for the islands over the weekend by buying what seafood vendors were calling “Diaoyu Island fresh fish” - all 4,000kg of it.
The vendors at the seafood fair sold out of the fish quickly, state media Xinhua reported on Saturday.
All of the fish were caught in waters near the disputed islands, known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan, said Xinhua.
“I just bought some Australian lobsters in an American supermarket,” said one user on China's twitter-like service Sina Weibo. “Does it mean Australia belongs to America?”
“I bet the fish speak with a Diaoyu accent,” said another.
