The blast took place around 9am near the intersection of Zhonghua and Tongze Streets in the northeastern city of Shenyang, Nen.com.cn reported.
Glass fragments were seen on the ground and more than 10 fire engines arrive on the scene, the news portal reported.
A traffic officer said coal gas triggered the explosion, but he did not say how.
Five people were reported to have minor injuries and were sent to the hospital, according to a post on Shenyang's official Sina Weibo account.
A microblogger earlier said he witnessed passengers “blown to the sky".
“There was an explosion at the underground pass near Taiyuan Street. Four well lids and passengers were blown to the sky, windows broken, and taxis smashed,” the microblogger wrote on a social media service.
Residents said they felt the tremor from a kilometre away, state news agency Xinhua reported.
