People’s Daily vows to destroy Apple’s ‘unparalleled arrogance’

War of words continues following CCTV attack on iPhone manufacturer

Days after China’s state broadcaster CCTV attacked Apple for allegedly providing Chinese users with an inferior service, Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece the People’s Daily officially waded into the row on Wednesday.

In a harshly worded commentary titled “Let’s strike away Apple’s unparalleled arrogance,” , the paper criticised Apple for being “dishonest,” “greedy” - and above all - “arrogant.”

In particular, Apple has returned the considerable contributions China has made to its revenue, the editorial said, with a “swaggering arrogance” that must have originated from the "traditional superiority enjoyed by westerners".

“[Apple must have thought] why does a developing ancient oriental country deserve the same customer service as their western counterparts?”, the commentary said.

The Daily also blamed the “greediness of capital”, since Apple has “gone crazy” chasing after profit, it claimed.

“If offending Chinese customers reduces cost for Apple at zero risk, why not?,” asked the editorial.

It then went on to urge stricter law enforcement to prevent loopholes in the market.

“If you insist on challenging Chinese customers’ love and patience, and continue to be heedless, then your business will eventually decline no matter how glamorous or successful your brand is,” it said.

The Daily rolled out the commentary days after netizens lashed out at CCTV for picking on Apple and avoiding more serious domestic issues in its annual consumer rights show aired on March 15th.

CCTV’s show backfired after online evidence suggested that the crew had invited a few celebrities in advance to post Weibo messages attacking apple.

In an official statement released by Apple last week in response to CCTV’s accusations, the company denied imposing double standards on Chinese customers and said its practices were "completely legal".

But this appears to have failed to appease the authorities.

Preceding the attack from People's Daily, Miao Wei, head of China’s ministry of Industry and Information Technology,  said during a summit  on Monday that while Chinese phone makers have produced an excessive number of phones, the nations’ young people are lining up all night long to buy the latest iPhone models.

Miao then said there is still room for innovation even in a market as competitive as mobile phones.

Poeple’s Daily’s commentary on Apple sparked heated discussions on China’s social media on Wednesday.

“It is People’s Daily who’s being arrogant,” said one blogger. "They've lost by criticising Apple with Cultural Revolution style languages."

“Talking about arrogance, how about these state-owned Chinese behemoths?,” wrote another, citing China Mobile and Sinopec.

Many speculated that Apple must have offended Chinese authorities in a serious manner to have drawn such ruthless attack.

“Apple only advertised with local TV stations, but not CCTV, ” said a blogger. “That’s why.”

“Maybe Apple hasn’t been paying their protection fees?,” wrote another blogger in a sarcastic manner.

According to a separate report by the Beijing Times on Wednesday, officials in the capital have arrested vendors illegally selling paper models of iPhone5 to residents preparing for Tombs Sweeping Day. On this traditional holiday, families would tend to graves of the departed and offer flowers, fruit and items made of paper - such as paper money and paper clothes.

bmr - The 1% usually aren't as simple so many dont have one nationality, but If I had to state one, I would've thought that you can sense from the air of superiority that I'm British.
Still I find it fascinating that the numerous posts about mainlanders stay at home and a post by a person who uses a name of a known racist who has been sentenced to 2.5 years in jail (plus for offenses of insultiing muslims and sexual slander) are unanswered by scmp readers, while when I gave you lot a taste of your same medicine from a Chinese perspective, I become so popular.
This truely shows how simple and bigoted most scmp readers are,and fail to read between the line on their own hipocrisy.
In a country where the government and the mafia is the same organisation this is what passes for public relations. Accordingly, do expect PRC's unprecedented run of bad publicity to continue indefinitely.
I usually do not want to comment on the fact that if I do not know. But in any case, I am glad that the Chinese media knows how to fight back to defend themselves. China has been conducive to many American politicians a punching bag. Chinese media is far too silent in this regard.

Your right... you should not comment first hand... guess what ... once again you don't know the fact :D case closed, thnx for this joke.
eh? (scratching head)
Defend themselves against what, exactly? Please enlighten...
Alot of hot air about unequal service and arrogance, but very short (NONE) on specifics as to what the differences actually are (absolutely no factual comparisons)
If you are going to run a story, at least put some facts in it and don't just go with the hysteria!
If you want to see "unparalleled arrogance," just look at the Chinese Communist Party.
Some comments in these posts are racist, or verging on racism.
They have been too ignorant to differentiate between the words of the communist party and Chinese, and are trying to portray Chinese as backward, a developing country that can only copy.
Also note you cant be racist to a company- protectionist, hypocritical or even xenophobic maybe, but not racist to Apple.
To annoy the racists here, you should note that in studies, Chinese as a race, together with hasidic jews, have a higher IQ than average.
In particular, I have reported the post by seppolehto@mac.com. Seppo Lehto is a Finnish far right extremist who was sentenced to jail for inciting racial hatred, id theft, sexual slander and blaspheming against Islam (check wiki). A person using this tag should be banned from thus site (together with those who clicked like on his post).
ehh, yes of course.
And pretending that (i) Chinese is a race and (ii) Chinese have higher IQ than others is not racist perhaps ? Go back to your phrenologist studies and stop bothering acting like someone educated.
I don't question whether or not the Chinese have a higher IQ. My only comment would be that you are clearly not Chinese nor are you Jewish.

"Chinese" is not a race. It is a nationality. It is the country that is being criticised. I see no criticism of Chinese outside of the mainland here. The taxonomies of race are silly anyway, but if you insist on them, "Asian" or "Asiatic" is the racial division. So why play the "race" card yourself? And it's an even stranger idea that there is ANY kind of genetic/racial marker for Hassidic Jews, which is simply one branch of orthodox Judaism.
I was reponding to "Dogs and Chinese" not allowed in parks comment. If you fail to see that as not insulting to all Chinese then you are obviously uneducated in Chinese matters, though this is not surprising as many Americans know little outside the USA. This is a sore point in the colonial past to all Chinese including Hong Kongers, akin to Nazi holocaust denials, hence I need to educate you on this matter if you didnt see the insult.
Other posts refer to most Chinese being uneducated and just copying.
I should of meant Askenazi jews who do originate from central Europe not Hasidic but it was 3am. The Global Bell curve identified them together with East Asian as more intelligent than whites.
Asians grouping used by Yanks is very annoying to most in Asia as Japan and China have huge differences as we arent all slanty eyed yellow brainy people.
And technically it is Han Chinese that is an ethnicity/race tho most references to Chinese mean that since they are the vast majority in China.
However I do think the CP Leadership is being stupid about this but this is not about them being racist about it.

The sign almost certainly did not exist, and certainly not in the terms usually quoted. It was an invention of communist propaganda. There is NO report from the actual time in historical newspapers or other records of this sign and the legend first appeared in the late 40s /early 50s. However YOU are the one making accusations of racism, and for that to work you have to know that a race and a religious orientation or a nationality are very different things. No, "Han Chinese" is not a race. In fact, surveys that have shown ASIANS images of other Asians have proved conclusively that THEY cannot identify the nationalities by appearances. The rest is nationality and culture.
The only person here apparently playing the race card is you. "The whites"? What about "the yellows"? Really, get over it. Frankly there are NO genetic differences between most Asian nationalities and they are certainly not predicated on national borders. It is invidious and not very brainy to promote "racial" pride and then accuse others of invoking racism.
That sign was never proven to actually have existed and is probably from the imagination of some people that wanted to fire up the locals to rebel against the outsiders.
Apple as a technological company has one of the highest customer satisfaction services in the whole world. Just book your appointment online, pop over to the store and be served by well-mannered and trained staff. For a state-broadcaster and communist mouthpiece to sudden start attacking with such vitriol about ‘greed’, ‘dishonesty’, ‘arrogance’, and ‘western capitalism’ is embarrassing and bemusing to say the least. Looks like extreme jealousy at work. How can a western technology company be so successful, innovative and loved so much around the world? They probably think. Why can’t any of our own state-owned companies be admired like that around the world? It is because your regime controls your citizens like children and does not allow them their freedoms – which stifles their creativity and innovation which are the seeds of success of such companies as Apple (the core philosophy of Steve Jobs was to simply make technology simple to use that allowed people to be creative and do more). The mindset your regime propagates is one that copies and steals from others to make a quick profit for oneself – that is why China is the factory for the world and not a leader of innovation.

There is clearly something going on behind the scenes here. State mouthpieces don't attack a company unless you have annoyed the government. What they seem most annoyed about is that their own people want Apple.
Perhaps that is the regime’s greatest fear: for their citizens who have been brainwashed into anti-foreign propaganda to sudden love what the outside world has to offer instead of their own goods. Who actually wants a fake imitation that is inferior when Chinese citizens now have the power to buy the originals? (with better post-purchase services too!). No company is perfect, certainly not Apple, but Chinese companies and the state can certainly learn something from Apple about offering a high-level of satisfaction to its customers/citizens.
My wife's Iphone 4 had some technical problems and Apple immediately replaced it. The service in China is no different than in the US. I love all of this Marxist ideology mixed with criticisms of capitalism in the most capitalist country in the world. Talk about Irony.
I wonder what the fake Apple shop in Kunming has to say about this?
WOW! How unbelievably racist of China. It's not Apple's fault one can't good customer service in China. It's because most of China isn't properly educated. Maybe the People's Daily should go back to school and learn how journalism actually works. How racist and arrogant of uneducated mainlanders. How about you Mainlanders STAY PUT in China?!!!
OldPeak Toad
Maybe Mr. Xi brings home some i-Phones made in Russia! With great service for comrade patriots.
Well, next time a HK official goes to China with an iPhone, they must not love their country
In all the articles on this I haven't seen any facts or information on how exactly Apple has different warranty standards to the other countries it sells in, and if they do how does it differ from other brands in China.
But the rhetoric coming out the People's Daily, laughable!
why doesnt the most powerful and rich nation on earth ensure more than half the population has proper sanitation, running water and schools FIRST
no, that is too hard
It is about money since it is not about party politics. Final negotiations between China Mobile and Apple must be heated. The state is its biggest shareholder. China Mobile new 4G LTE network is rolling out this year and testing of handsets must begin. The executives have wanted to deal with Apple and the iPhone like the two other smaller competitors but have been prevented from a final agreement. They have started to lose their customers to the competitors in the last two quarters's numbers and want an equal chance with the LTE rollout.
Dai Muff
If users thought the service was inferior they'd be stupid to be buying Apple wouldn't they? They obviously don't agree with CCTV or People's Daily. So why is the STATE suddenly going after Apple?
Why don't the people of a developing ancient oriental country deserve the same freedoms (the vote, free press, rule of law, social security etc.) as their Western counterparts?
Because Jackie Chan opines they're too immature for it.
"Dishonest, greedy and arrogant..." Is the People's Daily writing about the Chinese leadership yet again? Boy, oh boy...when will china ever stop playing the victim card??
Those who are offended can stop buying Apple products. Get the latest Huawei phone.
