Thousands of homes were destroyed and at least 47 people were injured after two earthquakes, at 4.8 and 4.2 magnitude, jolted Sichuan’s Yibin city on Thursday morning, said a government website.

Yibin is about 300 kilometres from Yaan, where a 7-magnitude temblor on Saturday killed more than 190 people. The city has about 4.4 million residents, according to a 2010 census.

Thursday's twin quakes ocurred around 6am, according to a Sichuan government website.

The US Geological Survey website shows one tremor that occurred at 6.10am, registering 5.3 on the Richter scale.
