Man kills two in Beijing stabbing spree, dies in fight with police

The knife-wielding man, who was not identified, attacked a motorist and two passengers in a private vehicle, China Central Television reported on Saturday. 

A knife-wielding man stabbed two people to death and severely injured another in Beijing on Saturday before dying from injuries sustained during a stand-off with police.

The incident happened at 2pm near the Guangqumen Bridge in downtown Beijing’s Dongcheng district, the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau said in a statement.

The assailant, who has yet to be identified, attacked a motorist and two passengers in a private vehicle, China Central Television reported on Saturday.

Two of the injured victims died at hospital and the third was still under treatment, the police statement said.

By the time police arrived on the scene, the man was in a car and surrounded by a mob of angry passersby. He was eventually brought under control, but he suffered injuries while resisting arrest and later died in hospital.

Police are investigating the incident.
